    • The head slider mounts a recording/reproducing element and flies over a recording medium with the airflow generated when the recording medium moves. The head slider comprises a slider body having an air inflow end and an air outflow end, a rail projected from the slider body to define an air bearing surface extended to the outflow end, a projection formed on the rail and between the inflow end and the outflow end, and a recess formed at the outflow end of the rail to make narrow the width of the rail. When the recording medium stops, the head slider and the recording medium are in contact at the projection and the air outflow end of the rail. Since the outflow end of the rail is narrow in width, the stiction can be prevented. Moreover, it is unnecessary to form a projection near the outflow end of the rail and thereby the flying height of the recording/reproducing element can be lowered to improve the recording/reproducing sensitivity.

    • A rail is formed on a medium-opposed surface of a slider body in a flying head slider. An air bearing surface is defined on the upper surface of the rail, which faces the medium. Projections are formed on the medium-opposed surface. The projections serve to space the air bearing surface from a medium such as a recording disk when the slider body contacts the recording disk. A trailing end of the rail is narrowed laterally along the trailing end of the medium-opposed surface. Even when the slider body contacts the recording disk at the trailing end, in addition to the projections, the contact area between the slider body and the recording disk is reduced because of the narrowed trailing end. Since the rail is narrowed without changing its original thickness or height from the bottom base of the medium-opposed surface, no additional processing is required to form the air bearing surface.

    • An air-bearing head slider supports an electromagnetic transducer opposed to a rotating recording medium or magnetic disk. The slider includes a slider body having a bottom surface opposed to the rotating magnetic disk, the bottom surface having an air-entry end and an air-delivery end with respect to an air flow generated between the slider body and the rotating recording medium. A central rail is provided on the surface of the slider body at the air-entry end. The central rail extends from the air-entry end and terminates on its way to the air-delivery end. Two side rails are provided on the surface of the slider body at the air-delivery side and extend from the air-delivery end and terminate on their way to the air-entry end. An air flow passage, extending from the air-entry end to the air-delivery end, includes air gaps defined between the central rail and the two side rails and an area on the bottom surface located downstream of the gaps, so that a negative pressure is generated in the downstream area due to the air flow passing through the gaps.

The head slider includes a front rail formed on the disk opposing surface in the vicinity of the air inlet end, the front rail having an air bearing surface and a step surface lower in level than the air bearing surface; a transducer formed in the vicinity of the air outlet end; and a first groove for expanding air once compressed by the front rail to generate a negative pressure.     • A flying head slider includes a slider body. The upstream or leading end of a bottom surface on the slider body is defined along a first datum line extending in the lateral direction of the slider body. The first datum line may be set perpendicular to the longitudinal centerline of the slider body. The upstream or leading end of the front air bearing surface is defined along a second datum line intersecting the first datum line at a predetermined inclined angle. As the incidence angle of an airflow colliding against a step defined at the leading end of the front air bearing surface gets decreased, the pitch angle of the slider body also gets decreased in the flying head slider during flight.
