    • In a communication system having a master-slave arrangement communicating with each other using the RS485 protocol, an FPGA with a buffer memory is provided in the master and slave, respectively, to handle the actual communication. The CPUs of the master and slave transfer data to and from the respective buffer memory. The master's FPGA initiates and maintains communication with the slave's FPGA. The masters FPGA and the slave's FPGA communicate with each other using the RS485 protocol by transmitting requests, acknowledgements and data. From the standpoint of the CPUs of the master and slave, the communication appears to be full duplex, although the actual communication between the FPGAs is half duplex. One particular application of the communication method is a KVM switch system where the KVM switch acts as the master and the computers connected to the KVM switch act as slaves.

    • The present invention discloses a remote control device. Via the present remote control device, a remote computing device can operate a plurality of computing devices and further administrate the whole system constituted by the plurality of computing devices and a KVM switch via a network. The remote control device and the method used therein firstly generates a menu in response to a request from the remote computing device, and the menu has at least one option for a remote control action. The menu is then transmitted to the remote computing device via the network. Once a cursor position representing a chosen option is received from the remote computing device via the network, the cursor position corresponds to the option. The remote control action is carried out according to the cursor position.

    • A video data recoding method suitable for recording computer sessions. Each video image frame is divided into multiple blocks. A server processes the video frames and transmits only changed blocks for each frame to a video log server. The video log server stores the changed blocks with block indices in a data file. The video log server also maintains a virtual frame table which stores, for each block of the frame, the data location within the data file where the most recent occurrence of that block is stored. The virtual frame table is continuously updated as changed blocks are stored in the data file. The video log server further stores a snapshot file containing snapshots of the virtual frame table at predetermined time points, along with time stamps and a next changed frame location. The data file and the snapshot file are used to reproduce the video images.

In a stand-alone configuration, the combination console module includes a control section, an analog-to-digital converter for converting analog video signals from the KVM switch to digital video signals, a digital-to-analog converter (DAC) for converting digital video signals from the network to analog signals, a video switch for applying either the input video signal form the KVM switch or video signals from the DAC to the console's display, and a network interface device. The keyboard/mouse signals from the console are processed by the control section and transmitted to either the KVM switch or the network. The combination console module can also be implemented by modifying a conventional IKVM switch by adding the DAC.

    • A method for image compression is described. The method compresses computer images for efficient transfer of consecutive compressed images through a network. The method comprises loading two consecutive images, fuzzy comparing the two consecutive images, calculating the total different number between the two consecutive images, and determining an encoding algorithm, such as run-length and delta-modulation (RLEDM) or JPEG, according to the total different number. The fuzzy comparison eliminates deviations caused by capturing errors. The RLEDM encoding algorithm of the invention only deals with image differences between the two consecutive images, including line pattern indexes and line patterns, and depends on a minimum encoding size rule to further determine the encoding algorithm, such as a direct encoding, a run-length encoding or a delta-modulation encoding. The method provides an improved encoding algorithm by using a strategy where different circumstances each involve adopting an optimum method to reduce a bandwidth requirement of networks.
