    • An automatic document feeder is provided with a reading unit disposed above a platen for reading an original. The reading unit includes a platen roller for transporting the original to the reading unit; a guide device arranged between the platen and the platen roller and formed in a curved original reading path; a pressing device for pressing the guide device against the platen roller; and a regulating device for creating a space between a surface of the platen roller and an upper surface of the platen. When the original is transported between the platen roller and the guide device, the original moves the guide device toward the platen.

    • An automatic document feeder is provided with the first transport device and the second transport device for feeding an original at a reading position to read the original, and a curved reading path disposed between the first transport device and second transport device. The automatic document feeder is also provided with a reading guide unit including the first guide member disposed at an upstream side of the reading position in an original feeding direction for guiding the original to the reading position, the second guide member disposed at a downstream side of the reading position in the original feeding direction for guiding the original from the reading position, a flexible transparent film member extending between the first guide member and the second guide member for forming the reading path. The reading guide unit is detachably and rotatably supported on an apparatus frame of the automatic document feeder.

    • In supporting a heavy load with a spring member disposed between a fixed frame and a support frame, provided are a follower member that transfers a spring force of the spring member to the support frame, first and second cam surfaces that regulate motion of the follower member, and a biasing device for bringing the follower member into press-contact with the cam surfaces, the first cam surface generates a friction force to reduce an effect of the heavy load, the second cam surface generates a friction force to reduce an effect of the spring force, and the follower member is made movable in an expansion/contraction direction of the spring, and also in a direction crossing the expansion/contraction direction to control engagement of the follower member and the cam surfaces.

    • Provided is an operation handle mechanism with which a handle can be conveniently operated to move a movable section, thereby ensuring smooth operation and movement at any time regardless of an operation position of the handle. An operation handle section 121 includes a handle lever 67, which is used to operate movement of a support frame section 23 capable of moving up and down, and left and right transmission rods 123a and 123b, which are joined to the handle lever. The transmission rods can only move a predetermined distance in a movement direction thereof relative to the support frame section, and start to move together with the support frame section after going beyond that distance. The left and right transmission rods are connected via rack sections 140a and 140b of the transmission rods and a gear train 134a, 134b, 135a, and 135b meshing with the rack sections in such a way as to enable transmission of part of an operation force coming from the handle lever from one transmission rod to the other and thereby allow the two transmission rods to simultaneously move only the same distance.
