    • A detection sensor detects a position of a level detection lever that touches an uppermost sheet of sheets stacked on a holding tray, and a computing device counts the number of sheets that have been discharged to the holding tray. A judging device judges the amount of sheets stacked based on a sheet surface level detection signal from the detection sensor and a count value of the computing device. The apparatus accurately judges that the maximum amount of sheets have been stacked in the holding tray according to the position of the level detection lever and a count value for a number of sheets. Also, the apparatus selects one of a plurality of values for an offset sheet count, which corresponds to the operating conditions, namely the transporting speed of sheets, the intervals between sheets, and the length of the transport direction of the sheets.

    • In a device and method for feeding one by one documents including a preceding document to be fed earlier and a following document to be fed later to an image scanning station having a scanning reference point, the document being transported toward the image scanning station is first measured to find the length of the document, so that the following document is introduced into the image scanning station with timing varying with the length of the preceding document after the preceding document is treated and discharged. In a case that the following document passes past the scanning reference point just when the preceding document is discharged, the following document is moved backward to the scanning reference point, but if the following document does not reach the scanning reference point at that time, it is further forwarded to the appropriate image scanning station, consequently to shorten the interval of transporting the preceding and following documents, thus speeding up the image processing operation.

    • In a document feeder, a length of a discharge path from a reading position to a discharge position is longer than a length of a supply path from a feeding position to the reading position. An idling discharge position is disposed, where the distance with the discharge position through the discharge path is shorter than a distance between the feeding position and the reading speed switching position. A control device controls driving of registration rollers, conveyor rollers and discharge rollers simultaneously when a trailing edge of an original reaches the discharge idling position of the discharge path by the discharge rollers while the discharge rollers is stopped. The document feeder efficiently supplies originals sequentially to the reading position, stably reads the image of the original without discharging a previous original during a reading, and aligns and stores the originals in a discharge stacker.
