    • The disclosure generally relates to a multimode imaging apparatus for simultaneously obtaining multiple wavelength-discriminative spectral images of a sample. In one embodiment, the apparatus includes an image selector having a rotator assembly, the rotator assembly housing a first plurality of optical components, the image selector adapted to receive a illuminating photons having a first wavelength and direct the illuminating photons to the sample, the image selector adapted to receive illuminating photons interacted with the sample and selectively direct said interacted photons to one of a plurality of detection sources; a microscope turret housing a second plurality of components, the microscope turret adapted to receive illuminating photons having a second wavelength and direct the photons to the sample; the microscopic turret adapted to receive illuminating photons interacted with the sample and selectively direct said interacted photons to one of a plurality of detection sources; wherein substantially all of the interacted photons are selectively directed one of a plurality of detection sources to form multiple wavelength discriminative spectral images of the sample simultaneously.

    • A hyper-spectral imaging filter has serial stages along an optical signal path with angularly distributed birefringent retarders and polarizers forming interference filters. The retarders can include tunable birefringent elements such as liquid crystals controlled in unison, fixed retarders and/or combined tunable and fixed birefringences. Distinctly different periodic transmission spectra are provided by different filter stages, each having multiple retarders, in particular with some stages having broad bandpass peaks at wide spectral spacing and other stages have very narrow closely spaced peaks. The respective spectra include at least one tunably selectable band at which the transmission spectra of the filter stages coincide, whereby the salutary narrow bandpass and wide spectral spacing ranges of different stages apply together, resulting in a high finesse wavelength filter suitable for spectral imaging.

    • A hyper-spectral imaging filter has serial stages along an optical signal path in a Solc filter configuration. Angularly distributed retarder elements of equal birefringence are stacked in each stage, with a polarizer between stages. The retarders can include tunable (such as abutted liquid crystals tuned in unison), fixed and/or combined tunable and fixed birefringences. Although the retardations are equal within each stage, distinctly different retardations are used for two or more different stages. This causes some stages to pass narrow bandpass peaks and other stages to have widely spaced bandpass peaks. The transmission functions of the serial stages are superimposed with selected preferably-tunable peaks coinciding. The resulting conjugate filter has a high finesse ratio, and good out of band rejection.

    • A wavelength bandpass filter for chemical imaging and similar uses is configured to minimize absorption in ultraviolet wavelengths and arranged in a Solc, Lyot or similar arrangement of stacked controllable birefringent cells. A number of tunable liquid crystal cells are placed successively in a stack along an optical path, each of the cells having an electrically tunable birefringent element, wherein the cells are dimensioned and arranged at respective angular orientations for passing a tuned bandpass wavelength. A polarizer is arranged at least at an output end for controlling a polarization orientation of light. The liquid crystal cells each comprise at least one supporting plate, an alignment layer and birefringent layer, and wherein the liquid crystal cells are at least 90% transmissive over a UV wavelength tuning range between 280 and 400 ηm or larger.
