    • The harvesting of hair for a hair transplant procedure employs a hollow drill with an imaging system which permits alignment of center of the cutting edge of a hollow tube with the axis of the follicular unit to be removed. The diameter of the hollow tube is chosen such that when properly aligned, a follicular unit is removed without damaging critical anatomical portions of the follicles. In one embodiment, a medium in either liquid or vapor form is introduced to cool or freeze the skin over the surface of the selected follicular unit. In another embodiment, suction is applied to aid in the removal of the excised follicular unit. In still another embodiment, a robotic arm is employed to position the hollow needle in each instance. In another embodiment, an electrical current or heat is applied to kill the shaft of the selected follicular unit without its removal.

    • A system for transplanting hair grafts from a donor region of a patient's scalp to a recipient region of the patient's scalp. The system includes harvesting N (N.gtoreq.21) strips of skin containing living hair follicles from the donor region of the patient's scalp, the N strips of skin being harvested simultaneously, and cutting the N strips of skin into hair grafts, the N strips of skin being cut simultaneously. The system also includes loading the hair grafts sequentially, bottom down, into a removable cartridge connected to an instrument for implanting the hair grafts into the recipient region of the patient's scalp, the hair grafts being loaded so as to create an air seal between the hair grafts and the cartridge, and implanting the hair grafts. The implanting includes implanting the hair grafts into the recipient region of the patient's scalp, one at a time, using the instrument, by (1) feeding a hair graft to a predetermined feed position in the instrument via air suction created by an air seal between the hair graft and the cartridge, (2) making an incision at a point in the recipient region of the patient's scalp at which the hair graft is to be implanted using a cutting device on the instrument, and (3) sliding the hair graft into the incision using an implanting member in the instrument.

    • A method and apparatus for measuring hair in a predefined area of skin. The method addresses the preparation of the skin and the device for counting the hairs in a defined area. The apparatus contains an optical magnifying lens, a housing for the lens and an aperture of known surface area in order to calculate the density of the hair in the portion of skin under measurement. When the method or apparatus are used, the end result will be a density measurement of hair per unit area. When this measurement is compared with similar measurements in the same area from a previous time or from a different area at the same time, a diagnosis of whether hair loss is occurring can be made with considerable accuracy. Similar applications can be made in areas where treatment suggests that hair loss has ceased or reversed through some intervention.
