    • An integral separator and cooling apparatus is provided for removing a lubricant from a heated, compressed lubricant and gas mixture, and for cooling the separated lubricant. The apparatus includes a lubricant reservoir for containing a liquid lubricant. A receiving plenum is made integral with the lubricant reservoir. The receiving plenum has an inlet for receiving the heated, compressed lubricant and gas mixture, a first outlet through which a heated, compressed gas exits, and a second outlet through which the separated lubricant flows from the receiving plenum. An apparatus is provided within the receiving plenum which causes a liquid lubricant to precipitate from the lubricant and gas mixture. A cooling core is made integral with the lubricant reservoir and the receiving plenum. The cooling core fluidly communicates with the lubricant reservoir and with the receiving plenum. The cooling core includes: a header apparatus mounted on the cooling core, a first flow passage which extends from the second outlet of the receiving plenum to the header apparatus, and a second flow passage which extends from the header apparatus to the lubricant reservoir. An apparatus directs a flow of cooling fluid across the first and second flow passages in response to a control signal from a thermal control apparatus.

    • The system comprises a conventional oil/gas separator, with an oil supply line extending from the separator oil reservoir for conducting oil to a machine (such as an associated gas compressor, or the like), and a gas/oil vapor line communicating with the gas chamber of the separator, for conducting oil vapor-laden gas thereto (from such a compressor, or like machine). In an embodiment of the improvement, a check valve is interposed between the oil supply line and the reservoir to prevent oil flow from the line to the reservoir, and a by-pass line, having a pilot-pressure-closed, normally-open valve interposed therein, is coupled between the oil supply line and the gas chamber. The valve senses chamber pressure and, when the latter is sufficiently diminished, opens the by-pass line to evacuate the oil supply line (and oil cooler and filter) into the separator.The improvement dramatically inhibits oil foaming and, among other benefits, this makes possible the use of a relatively small and, hence, inexpensive separator. The methods define the steps to be performed in modifying a conventional oil supply system (a) to incorporate the improvement therein, and (b) to control oil flow on shutdown to inhibit oil foaming.

    • An air compressor pressure regulating system which controls the operation of an air compressor. A variable speed driver, which is controlled by a throttle, controls the speed of the driver. A compressor valve integrally regulates the airflow to the compressor inlet. The pressure regulating valve is connected between the compressor outlet and a closed reservoir. The pressure existing in the closed reservoir directly effects both the operation of the compressor throttle and the compressor valve. The pressure regulating valve includes of two movable diaphragms (or pistons), which are spaced parallel to each other and which are connected to each other by a rigid connecting member producing similar motion in both diaphragms. The compressor outlet pressure is exposed to the first side of the first diaphragm. The reservoir pressure is exerted on the second side of the first diaphragm as well as the first side of the second diaphragm. An adjustable spring force and the vented atmosphere act on the second side of the second diaphragm. When the compressor outlet reaches a sufficient pressure, dependent on the reservoir pressure, both diaphragms will be jointly raised toward their respective second sides, and compressed air will be permitted to freely flow from the compressor outlet area to the closed reservoir.
