    • A metal thermal stud/plate has a center web with geometrically-shaped apertures spaced longitudinally along its centerline. The apertures define alternatingly-positioned narrow necks of material therebetween near ends of the center web. The narrow necks minimize thermal conductivity between the spaced flanges, but adjacent ones of the narrow necks are longitudinally misaligned due to their alternating positions to thus prevent forming a weak longitudinally-extending fold line in the stud/plate, thus maintaining its strength. In one form, the narrow necks are at most about 0.100 inches wide without substantially degrading the strength of the studs/plates, or can be a ratio of neck width to center web of as low as 0.09:4 down to 0.03:4. A building wall frame includes a plurality of the metal studs/plates and foam insulated panels with edges engaging the center webs of adjacent studs/plates to thus stabilize the metal studs/plates.

    • A shade structure includes a vertical column and a roof having a cover, a framework supporting the cover, and a mount attached for rotational adjustment to a top of the column and supporting the roof on the column. The framework includes a triangularly-shaped main beam arrangement comprising a plurality of beams secured together to form a triangle that lies in a vertical plane and that defines a peak and opposing first corners, with the mount being located between the peak and one of the opposing corners. The framework further includes a pair of transverse beams and a bracing beam secured to the triangular main beam arrangement that define opposing second corners. By this arrangement, an adjustable shade structure is provided that is able to withstand over 40 mph wind loads.

    • A masonry/brick support structure is adapted for secure positioning upon a substructure such as a wall and includes a sheet metal underlayer or panel having a plurality of tabs punched therein and extending outward from a first side thereof. Also positioned on the first side of the sheet metal panel are adhesive strips for permanently affixing bricks to the panel's first, or outer, side with the bricks positioned in a given spaced array on the panel by the tabs extending therefrom. The tabs may be incorporated in the sheet metal panel in virtually any array to allow for a wide range of brick shapes and dimensions as well as various brick alignment arrangements. The tabs provide support for the bricks when initially positioned upon the panel. Mortar or grout is positioned in the inter-brick spaces and over the tabs which are thus no longer visible. The first, outer surface of the sheet metal panel may also be provided with an appropriate adhesive layer for maintaining the mortar or grout applied thereto securely in position after it sets. The sheet metal panel may be provided on a second, inner surface thereof with an insulating layer such as a foam insulation which is maintained thereon by an appropriate adhesive layer to form an insulated building structure.

    • A building framework includes metal columns (e.g., tubular or I-beam), wood-product beams, and bracket connectors for joining the beams to the columns to form a building joint of sufficient strength and durability for buildings suitable for human occupation. First mechanical fasteners (such as bolts and nuts) secure a selected connector to the column, and second mechanical fasteners (such as lag bolts) secure a selected beam to the connector. The columns include double rows of holes. A plurality of different connectors with differently angled flanges are provided, such that beams can be connected at a wide variety of different angles. Further, the system allows columns and/or beams to be cut at the construction site, or at a building supply company. Thus, basic building components can be inventoried in a manner not previously possible, yet the system supports a wide variety of different building frames for on-site customization and adaptability.

    • A fabric covered structure such as for use as a gazebo or pavilion includes plural generally vertical support columns connected to roof beams which support a fabric roof. Opposed ends of the beams are each connected to one of the support columns and are each provided with a hook element for attachment to a cable or rope attached to the periphery of the fabric roof such as by being disposed in a peripheral hem of the fabric roof. Each roof beam is further provided with telescoping end portions to each of which is attached one of the hook elements for extending the end of the beam and maintaining the cable under tension and the fabric roof in a stretched condition.

    • A building system includes structural insulated panels having an inner insulating core such as of foam plastic or agri-board and strong thin facings such as of plastic impregnated/reinforced paper on opposed surfaces of the insulating core. The impregnated/reinforced paper provides the panel with high strength and facilitates attaching the panel to dimensional lumber or to similar adjacent panels. The opposed outer facings overlap/extend beyond the insulating core's edges in various configurations so as to provide several different panels, each adapted to satisfy a specific structural purpose. In a first configuration, three edges of the outer facings overlap respective edges of the insulating core for also overlapping a base plate, a top plate and an adjacent stud, panel, window or doorjamb. The fourth edge of the panel is adapted to be overlapped by the opposed outer facings of an adjacent panel and may include a structural insert within the insulating core to receive fasteners for securing the adjacent panel. In a second configuration, all four edges of the opposed outer facings overlap the four edges of the insulating core for also overlapping dimensional lumber on all four edges or for overlapping an adjacent panel(s) on one or two vertical edges. A third panel configuration has all four edges of the opposed outer facings overlapping adjacent edges of the panel's insulating core and further includes connector attachment material disposed beneath the outer facings and is easily sized in the field for a specific installation.

    • A roof panel juncture securely couples in a water sealed, abutting manner facing edges of adjacent, generally planar roof panels along the pitch of the roof. Each panel includes an upper sheet metal facing, a lower vinyl covered wood facing, and a core of rigid foam insulation sandwiched therebetween. The lateral edges of the panel's upper sheet metal facing are each provided with a 90.degree. upturned portion, the upper end portion of which is further bent downward at an acute angle toward the plane of the sheet metal facing to form a hook and drip-edge. The adjacent upturned facing edge portions of abutting panels are adapted to receive in sliding engagement along the lengths thereof a generally concave, elongated, linear roof batten which maintains adjacent roof panel edges in tight-fitting engagement so as to form a water-tight seal therebetween. The adjacent lateral edges of the lower facings of each of the roof panels are adapted to receive a ceiling batten therebetween along the length of the panels. The ceiling batten includes a lower slot along the length thereof which, in combination with a snap-in strip plate, forms an enclosed raceway for wire runs. A blocking spline is inserted in facing edges of adjacent panels and is maintained in position by the ceiling batten and provides a heat conduction break in the roof and reinforces the roof panel juncture.
