    • A rotary switch (102) for an electronic device (100) includes a bump stop (104) that triggers a ratcheting feature when hit. The range of the rotary switch (102) is expanded via the ratcheting feature. The ratcheting feature inhibits scrolling through a device parameter in one rotation direction and enables scrolling through the device parameter in the opposite rotation direction. Depending on which direction the bump stop (104) is hit, the parameter is either incremented or decremented. The range of the rotary switch can also be expanded by modifying the step size of the rotary switch based on the range of a selected parameter (504). The coarse step is then narrowed with each change in rotation direction (510, 518) based on current, previous and useable switch positions (512, 514).

    • A mechanism that provides for communication of heartbeat signals from servers (call agents) to clients (gateways) in a packet telephony network environment. Clients listen for receipt of multicast heartbeats from any of the servers that may be part of a multicast group. A client assigned to a particular server for control messaging, upon failure to receive a response to a message sent to the assigned server and failure to receive a heartbeat from the assigned server, may select a second server from among the servers and re-send the message to the second server. Without receipt of heartbeat signals, the client defaults to a normal retry behavior for re-sending the message first to the assigned server a number of times before attempting to re-send the message to the second server. With receipt of the heartbeat from the second server, the client adopts an aggressive retry behavior by re-sending the message to the assigned server a lesser number of retries before attempting to re-send the message to the second server. The clients use the multicast heartbeats as a hint, allowing them to switch to the more aggressive retry behavior and consequently reduce the time to re-associate with a new server and re-establish a new security association (if IPsec is used), resulting in a drastic reduction in service delay due to server failures.

    • A portable hand-held remote control unit device is disclosed which may be utilized for selecting designated functions in a plurality of remotely controllable multimedia processing units. Multiple user selectable screen objects may be created from a general purpose computer and transferred to the remote control unit. The screen objects include screen layout and descriptions of soft keys to be displayed on a graphic display of the remote control unit, as well as commands associated with the screen object, the soft keys and programmable keys on the remote control unit. The user may select any of the loaded screen objects for controlling various multimedia processing units, for performing complex functions of commands to various multimedia processing units.
