    • Disclosed is an electromagnetic acoustic transducer for use with electrically conductive objects. The transducer includes an electromagnet for establishing a static magnetic field directed into the object in a first region and directed out of the object in a second region. A meander coil for inducing eddy currents in the object when an alternating current is applied to the coil includes a first serpentine printed circuit on a first side of a printed circuit board and a second serpentine printed circuit on a second side of the board. The source and the coil are so oriented that the vector product of the field and the eddy currents produces an instantaneous force field in the object which is periodically alternately oriented.

    • An apparatus for generating acoustic waves of wavelength .lambda. in an electrically conductive object includes an electromagnetic acoustic transducer, with a source of magnetic flux for producing a magnetic field in the object, a first periodic coil within the field, and a second periodic coil within the field and offset from the first coil by .lambda./4. A first port of a four port hybrid is connected to the first coil and a second port is connected to the second coil, with a 90.degree. phase delay element interposed between the first port and the first coil. A signal generator provides an input signal at a frequency corresponding to .lambda., with a transmitter for applying the signal to either a third or a fourth port of the hybrid to generate a unidirectional wave in one of two opposite directions. An apparatus for detecting acoustic waves includes a first receiver connected to the third port and a second receiver connected to the fourth port.

    • A method and apparatus for providing a topographical map of the bottom of a patient's rear foot with the foot in a semi-weight bearing condition and in the neutral position adjusted for the effects of tibial torsion. A foot scanner with a pivoted air cushion is adjusted to a first position whereupon the foot is captured. Then the air cushion is oscillated relative to the first position until the talus and navicular exhibit congruency to establish a measurement position. A three-dimensional scanner measures the distances corresponding to the spacing between a reference plane and the bottom of at least the rear foot and midfoot. A manufacturing facility converts these measurements into information by which computer numerical controlled equipment machines an orthotic insert for the patient's footwear.

A flexible membrane defines the top of an air cushion that captures the patient's foot in the neutral position when the air pillow is inflated. The membrane also conforms to the bottom of the foot.     • Custom molded foot beds position the feet in balanced positions. A balanced foot position represents a referenced neutral foot position compensated for an individual's particular lower body anatomy. The foot beds and the apparatus and method for making the foot beds produce a balanced position by applying forces to the foot. First forces move the foot toward the referenced neutral position by a first foam block located under the forefoot lateral column. A composite foam block produces a rolling force in the rear foot to move the subtalar joint toward alignment. Other forces provide anatomical compensation including forces that elevate the heel and cup fatty tissue around the heel. Other forces support the remainder of the foot in this balanced position.

    • A broadband electromagnetic acoustic transducer is disclosed for use with an electrically conductive object. The transducer includes a source of magnetic flux for establishing a static magnetic field in the object and an electrical conductor for inducing eddy currents in the object when an alternating current is applied to the conductor. The magnetic field and the conductor are oriented so that the vector product of the magnetic field and the eddy currents produces an instantaneous force field in the object which is periodically alternately directed with a logarithmic periodicity. The source of magnetic flux may be provided by a plurality of alternately oriented magnets aligned along a propagation direction. Alternatively, the conductor may be a serpentine conductor with a plurality of parallel elements which are perpendicular to a propagation direction, the ratio of adjacent spacings between the elements being constant.
