    • A drive system for driving an endless chain of a mineral mining installation employs one or more chain wheels each driven by an electric motor and gearing including planetary gearing. The planetary gearing has a ring gear which can be held stationary to permit drive to be transmitted. The ring gear is coupled through a clutch, reduction gearing and a braking device to another load-balancing electric motor. Load sensors in the reduction gearing disengage the clutch in the event of overloading. The ring gear is automatically held stationary by the braking device when the load-balancing motor is inoperative. When the motor is switched on the braking device is released to permit the motor to rotate the ring gear in one direction or the other at controlled speed to vary the transmission ratio and effect load balancing.

    • A gearing unit has a housing containing gearing drivably interconnecting a rotary input to an output shaft used to propel a drive chain of a mineral mining machine. A clutch is provided which is released by hydraulic pressure to disengage the drive automatically should excessive loading occur. A spigot rotatably locked to the shaft provides a fluid passage for hydraulic fluid used to release the clutch and the fluid flow is controlled by an electromagnetic valve. A torsion bar carrying a load sensor is located within the spigot and the sensor provides an electrical signal transferred to control means for operating the valve via a slip-ring system. The torsion bar is rotatably locked to the shaft via a coupling rod disposed within the shaft and a push-in connection. The torsion bar is also rotatably secured to the spigot for easy release therefrom. Access to the bar from outside the housing is facilitated and by releasing at least the connection between the spigot and the bar, the latter can be withdrawn axially while leaving the other components intact.

    • A gearing unit with planetary gearing stages employs a load sensor and a clutch for disengaging drive through the gearing should the sensor detect overloading. The load sensor is in the form of a stationary pin provided with a strain gauge transducer easily accessible via a bore in a housing. The pin bears on a rotatable component of one of the planetary gearing stages to hold this component stationary during operation and is subjected to force proportional to dynamic loading on the gearing. The clutch serves as a brake to hold a rotatable component of another planetary gearing stage stationary and on release permits this component to rotate to interrupt the drive.

    • A gearing unit with planetary gearing employs a load sensor in the form of a stationary pin provided with a strain gauge transducer easily accessible via a bore in its casing. A brake with respective plate carriers is associated with the planetary gearing. One of these carriers is held stationary with the aid of the load sensor while the other of the carriers meshes via teeth with a rotatable component of the gearing. During operation the carriers lock together to hold the component of the planetary gearing stationary to permit drive to be transmitted. The load sensor is then subjected to force proportional to the dynamic loading on the gearing and brake. In the event of overloading the carriers are disengaged by hydraulic force in response to a signal from the sensor to permit the planetary gearing component to rotate and thus interrupts the drive.

    • A gearing unit has an input shaft coupled via a gear train and a clutch to an output shaft which can propel a drive chain for a mineral winning machine or plough.The clutch is released by hydraulic pressure and a load sensor operates a valve device to release the clutch should an excessive load occur. The response of the hydraulic system is optimised by using a special fast-switching valve device and by maintaining a certain pressure in a release chamber of the clutch by circulating pressure fluid through the valve device when the clutch connects the drive to the output shaft. This pressure is lower than that necessary to release the clutch and the valve device rapidly switches to increase the pressure should an overload occur.
