    • An apparatus for transferring successively arriving piece goods, especially printed products, from a first individual conveyor to a second individual conveyor, each of the individual conveyors being provided with tandemly arranged, controlled grippers each of which serve to grip one of the piece goods. Between both of the individual conveyors there is arranged a third revolving individual conveyor equipped with controlled entrainment members. Each of the entrainment members serving to seize or engage one of the piece goods. The conveying-active run of the third individual conveyor can be introduced at its end regions into the conveying paths of the first and second individual conveyors. • Tubular packs (P) containing a wound scaled formation of printed products and are held together by a protective/holding element (10) wound around the wound scaled formation. The protective/holding element is equipped with a feature to facilitate opening and for identification. The element is produced by guiding the protective/holding element (10), before or during winding, past at least one coating device which is moveable transversely to the conveying direction and coating the protective/holding element locally. At least one strip (20) is formed on the protective/holding elements (10) running from one transverse edge (12.1) to the other (12.2) and having a varying distance from the longitudinal edges (13) and therefore showing a discontinuity (14) in an overlap area of the transverse edge (12.2) on the outside of the pack. The discontinuity allows the edge to be easily recognizable. The coating additionally can weaken or prevent adhesion between overlapping surfaces of the protective/holding element (10), providing a physical help for opening the pack. Identification is aided by the strip (20) having, in different packs, different colors and/or different widths.

    • The winding apparatus comprises an elevationally adjustable bearing arrangement for rotatably mounting and driving a winding core. Underneath the bearing arrangement, there is provided a conveyor-belt arrangement which is driven by partially training or wrapping around the winding core or, as the case may be, a product package wound up thereon. The conveyor-belt arrangement conveys printed products, which are to be wound up, to the winding core. Prior to winding up the printed products, a winding band is unwound from the winding core and wound onto a winding-band spool. For this purpose, the winding-band spool is connected by means of a slip friction coupling with respective rolls and thus with the conveyor-belt arrangement. During the winding-up of the winding band in conjunction with the printed products onto the winding core, the winding-band spool is braked. A detaching roller for detaching the free end of the winding band wound-up on the winding core as a winding-band supply is drivably coupled with the winding-band spool by means of an endless belt. The endless belt takes the free end of the winding band from the detaching roller to the winding-band spool.

    • The cover sheet which is to be placed, is brought into a waiting position above a predetermined conveying path of the stacks of flat articles. The cover sheet is displaced from this waiting position onto one stack by means of a placing element arranged at the end of a piston rod of a piston cylinder unit. The piston-cylinder unit is pivotably mounted about an axis which extends at right angles to a predetermined travel or movement direction of the stack. In its rest position the piston-cylinder unit lies against a pad or buffer which keeps the piston-cylinder unit in an inclined position. By extending the piston rod, the cover sheet is placed onto a stack. The placing element which presses on the stack, is entrained by the further moving stack. Thus the piston-cylinder unit is deflected from its rest position. As soon as a detector detects such a deflecting movement, the detector generates a signal which triggers retraction of the piston rod. The reversal of the movement of the piston rod is thus effected in a simple manner. The inclination of the piston-cylinder unit together with the placing element permits positionally correct placement of cover sheets onto stacks of various heights without requiring a special control arrangement.

    • The apparatus has an intermediate conveyor (18) with conveying elements (26) distributed in the circumferential direction on bearing plates (36). Each conveying element (26) has a roller segment (54), which is driven counter to the direction of circulation (U), and a belt conveyor (56) which is assigned to said roller segment. A control device (48) keeps the conveying elements (26) in a mutually parallel position during circulation in the direction of circulation (U). During movement past the receiving location (16), a rear section (82) of the roller segment (54) and the belt conveyor (56) form an introduction gap (24) for a product (14) fed by a feed conveyor (12) in each case. During further rotation, said product (14) is moved through the conveying element (26), in the conveying gap (90) now formed by the roller segment (54) and belt conveyor (56), and is deflected by means of the guide element (92). At the transfer location (50), the product (14) is thus introduced into a gripper (96) of a removal conveyor (52), whereupon the conveying gap (90) is eliminated. The apparatus, while maintaining the sequence of the products (14), changes the position of the latter such that the sides (20, 20′) of the products (14), said sides facing one another in the fed imbricated stream (S), are changed round.

    • An apparatus for trimming multiple-sheet, folded printed products utilizing two processing drums adjacently arranged. The drums are each rotated about a horizontal axis by a drive mechanism. Each processing drum comprises radial compartments for receiving the printed products to be trimmed. Arranged on each end side of the first processing drum are two stationary cutting elements, one of which is in the operative position. The cutting element interacts with cutting elements which are fastened on the end side of the compartments on the compartment walls. In the first processing drum, the printed products are trimmed on their side borders running at right angles to the folding edge. Arranged on the circumferential edge of the second processing drum are stationary cutting elements with a cutting element in an operative position to interact with cutting elements which are assigned to the individual compartments and are arranged circumferentially in the compartments. The trimming of the open side edge, located opposite the folding edge of the printed products, takes place in the second processing drum. The transfer of the printed products which have been trimmed in the first drum to the second processing drum takes place by means of a conveying arrangement which comprises grippers arranged at regular intervals on a circulating drawing member.

    • The thickness of a printed product resting on a support is measured by a scanning unit which has two sensing elements which can be pressed back against the force of a spring. In a measuring zone, one sensing element is situated on the support and the other sensing element is situated on the printed product. By means of two laser sensors, the length of the distance between the one laser sensor and a measuring face of the first sensing element is measured and the length of the distance between the other laser sensor and a measuring face of the second sensing element is measured. From the difference between the lengths of these two distances, the thickness of the printed product can be determined. By a comparison of this thickness actual value with a prescribed thickness set value, it can then be established whether the product measured is complete or whether pages, parts, or supplements are missing or whether the product has too many pages, parts, or supplements.

The circuit includes at least two conductor parts and a voltage source. The printed products are scanned by simultaneously bringing the two conductor parts into scanning contact with a metallic contact portion of either a printed product or of a support therefore where such support is provided.
