    • A three slope proportioning valve for a motor vehicle hydraulic brake system is normally open to permit free fluid flow from an inlet port to an outlet port below a first predetermined inlet port pressure. At the first predetermined pressure, a first valve head is displaced by operation of a differential area piston to a position to cooperate with a valve seat member. the first valve head throttles fluid flow from the inlet port to the outlet port and maintains a first predetermined proportional relation between increases in inlet and outlet port pressure when the inlet port pressure is greater than the first predetermined pressure and less than a second predetermined pressure. At the second predetermined pressure a second valve head moves toward the valve seat and the first valve head moves away from the valve seat. The second valve head cooperates with the valve seat to throttle fluid flow from the inlet port to the outlet port and maintain a second predetermined proportional relation between increases in inlet port pressure and increases in outlet port pressure above the second predetermined pressure level.

    • A three slope proportioning valve for a motor vehicle hydraulic brake system is disclosed. The valve is normally open to permit free fluid flow from the inlet port to the outlet port below a first predetermined inlet port pressure. At the first predetermined pressure, a differential area piston is displaced and engages a floating valve member to isolate the inlet port from the outlet port. The differential area piston and the valve member then move together to decrease the outlet port volume and maintain increases in outlet port pressure above the predetermined pressure in a first predetermined proportional relation to increases in inlet port pressure up to a second predetermined inlet port pressure level. At the second predetermined pressure, the floating valve member is stopped against further movement, and the differential area piston moves away from the valve member to establish throttled fluid pressure communication between the inlet port and the outlet port to maintain further increases in outlet port pressure in a second predetermined proportional relation to further increases in inlet port pressure.

    • An anti-skid device for mechanically sensing a skid condition of a wheeled vehicle and for automatically regulating braking force to optimize braking effect. The device comprises an enclosed housing in which is mounted linear and rotational inertia bodies arranged to produce balanced forces in a normal braking situation and unbalanced forces in a skid condition. During a skid, a vacuum control circuit having a control port in the housing is operated by the unbalanced force to relieve braking pressure at the controlled wheels to prevent wheel lock-up and consequent loss of braking efficiency. Illustrated modifications include slip clutch means to protect the sensing apparatus from excessive forces under extreme wheel acceleration or deceleration and means to maintain a brake pressure retarding signal beyond a point at which wheel deceleration is returned to proportionality with linear deceleration to allow the controlled wheels to reach synchronous speed to maximize braking effect.
