    • A torque sensing instrument is disclosed which detects angular deflection of a shaft to determine torque imposed thereon. The sensing instrument includes a nozzle member positioned to direct fluid in a direction substantially tangentially of the shaft axis and an anvil member spaced a predetermined distance from and facing the nozzle member for impeding flow therefrom. Those members are moved toward each other as a function of torsional load imposed on the shaft. A fluid under constant pressure is delivered to the nozzle member and variations in pressure caused by a change in distance between nozzle and anvil members are detected to indicate torsional forces on the shaft. The anvil member includes a displaceable portion, such as a thinned neck section, which permits overload movement of the members toward each other beyond the predetermined initial distance to prevent deformation or damage to the nozzle member.

The nut may be threadably advanced on the body from a starting position to a midway position and from the midway position to a tightened position. During movement of the nut from the starting position to the midway position only the front sleeve is radially inwardly contracted. During movement of the nut from the midway position to the tightened position, the front sleeve does not move and only the rear sleeve is radially inwardly contracted.

    • A motor vehicle fluid power circuit is disclosed which includes a constant displacement pump driven by the engine of the vehicle, a flow divider, a control valve, an open center steering valve, a brake booster accumulator, and a brake booster. The entire output of the pump flows to the flow divider under all conditions, and 20 percent of the pump output is directed to the brake booster for open center operation of the brake booster under normal operating conditions while the remaining 80 percent of the pump output is directed to the control valve. The control valve selectively directs the fluid which it receives to the steering valve to assist in steering the vehicle or to the brake booster accumulator. The accumulator provides a reserve of high pressure fluid for closed center operation of the brake booster under emergency conditions.

    • A slave brake actuator and dual control circuit wherein the actuator is energized by either of a pair of redundant fluid circuits and by an auxiliary mechanical control in case of a total circuit failure or for normal parking situations. The actuator includes a pair of tandemly arranged pistons each responsive to fluid pressure in a separate circuit to produce a braking force on a common brake member, the force of the rearward piston being transmitted through the forward piston. In tandem with the pistons is a spring loaded plunger operable to apply a mechanical brake force through the pistons. The actuator arrangement causes the fluid circuitry to be automatically prooftested when energized to disengage the mechanical spring force.

    • A three slope proportioning valve for a motor vehicle hydraulic brake system is normally open to permit free fluid flow from an inlet port to an outlet port below a first predetermined inlet port pressure. At the first predetermined pressure, a first valve head is displaced by operation of a differential area piston to a position to cooperate with a valve seat member. the first valve head throttles fluid flow from the inlet port to the outlet port and maintains a first predetermined proportional relation between increases in inlet and outlet port pressure when the inlet port pressure is greater than the first predetermined pressure and less than a second predetermined pressure. At the second predetermined pressure a second valve head moves toward the valve seat and the first valve head moves away from the valve seat. The second valve head cooperates with the valve seat to throttle fluid flow from the inlet port to the outlet port and maintain a second predetermined proportional relation between increases in inlet port pressure and increases in outlet port pressure above the second predetermined pressure level.

A warning switch actuates an alarm device in response to a pressure failure in one of the circuits. A pressure modulating valve in the rear circuit maintains increases in rear brake pressure less than increases in front brake pressure when the front brake pressure exceeds a predetermined pressure. The warning switch is disposed forwardly of the fire wall of the motor vehicle and includes two front circuit outlet ports for supplying fluid pressure to the two front brakes. The pressure modulating valve is disposed adjacent the rear axle of the motor vehicle and includes two outlet ports for supplying fluid pressure to the two rear wheel brakes. An emergency control means which includes a solenoid is operable by the warning switch to render the pressure modulating valve inoperable in the event of a fluid pressure failure in the front circuit.

    • A coupling for use in forming a welded tube joint is disclosed along with a method for forming such joint. A thin coupling sleeve is tightly swage-fitted onto the end of a tube to form a male or female tube end assembly suitable for engagement with a tubular mating part assembly which may be a fitting or another coupling sleeve and tube assembly. The male-female interlocking arrangement provides radial and axial alignment of the joined assemblies. The structure is arranged to provide a space between the tube end face and the interior end face of the tubular mating part assembly. During the welding operation, external fusion heat is applied to form a single weld bead extending from the interior of the tube to the exterior surfaces of the assemblies. The width of the weld at its inner radial extremities is longer than the axial width of the space between the interior end faces and its width at its outer radial extremities is at least equal to twice the axial length of the male-female telescoped portion so that all the members are fused into a single unitary structure.

The head portion includes a clamping means having an over center toggle for clamping the tubes to be welded.
