    • A test strip for detecting acetylmethylcarbinol (AMC) produced by micro-organisms, and thus for distinguishing such AMC-producing enterobacteria as Aerobacter and Klebsiella from Escherichia coli and E. freundii which do not produce AMC, comprises a strip of bibulous material impregnated with a bacterial growth medium zone, a reagent zone and a hydrophobic barrier zone separating said zones; the medium zone comprises (a) a peptone or polypeptone, (b) dextrose, (c) potassium phosphate, (d) D-glucose and (e) a pyruvic acid salt, and the reagent zone comprises (a) 1-arginine or the monohydrochloride salt thereof and (b) a 1-naphthol sulphonic acid salt. A further barrier zone may be provided at a distance from, and on the other side of, the reagent zone to provide therebetween a migration zone for colour developed in the reagent zone. Sodium and lithium pyruvates and particular sodium and potassium salts of 1-naphthol -5-, -2-, -4- and -3:6- sulphonic acids are specified. The barrier material may comprise lacquer or a (specified) chrome complex. The bibulous material may be filter paper, felt, porous ceramic, or woven or matted glass fibre. In use, the growth medium zone is brought into contact with a suspension of unknown bacteria for 4-5 hours at 37 DEG C., aqueous alkali metal hydroxide is added and the suspension is brought into contact with the reagent zone: a pinkred colour indicates AMC.ALSO:A test strip for detecting acetylmethylcarbinol (AMC) produced by microorganisms comprises a strip of bibulous material impregnated with a bacterial growth medium zone, a reagent zone and a hydrophobic barrier zone separating said zones; the medium zone comprising (a) a peptone or polypeptone, (b) dextrose, (c) potassium phosphate, (d) D-glucose and (e) a pyruvic acid salt, and the reagent zone comprising (a) 1-arginine or the monohydrochloride salt thereof and (b) a 1-naphthol sulphonic acid salt.     • A test strip giving a colour reaction with indole comprises a bibulous material which has been impregnated with a solution in an inert volatile solvent of 1-10% p-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde and 10-40% oxalic acid. Specified solvents are methanol and ethanol. A barrier zone may be provided to prevent capillary migration of the reagent, e.g. by applying a lacquer. The bibulous material may be filter paper, felt, porous ceramic strips or woven or matted glass fibres. The absorbency of said materials may be increased by coating with a polymer such as hydroxymethyl cellulose. The test strip may be employed to distinguish indole-producing bacteria such as Escherichia coli from Aerobacter aerogenes or Salmonella typhi. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 779,921.
