    • An apparatus for use with an automotive vehicle supported on traction and follower road wheels to control the braking forces applied to the respective road wheels. A target vehicle deceleration is calculated based on a driver's force exerted to apply braking to the vehicle. Target braking forces required for the respective road wheels are calculated in a manner to achieve the target vehicle deceleration based on loads to be shared by the respective road wheels. Target brake torque for the respective road wheels are calculated based on the calculated target braking forces. Drive torque for the respective road wheels are calculated. The drive torque calculated for the respective traction road wheels are used to correct the corresponding target brake torque calculated for the respective traction road wheels so as to calculate target traction road wheel brake torque. The braking forces applied to the respective road wheels are controlled in a manner to achieve the target brake torque calculated for the respective follower road wheels and also to achieve the target traction road wheel brake torque calculated for the respective traction road wheels.

    • A system for a wheeled vehicle includes sensors for determining wheel speed, wheel load and wheel longitudinal driving or braking force of each wheel, and an estimating or controlling unit for estimating a vehicle body speed and/or a road surface friction coefficient from sensor output signals. The estimating unit determines a coordinate pair of a wheel speed value and a longitudinal force coefficient value for each wheel, and plots the coordinate pairs of the individual wheels as a set of points in a plane rectangular coordinate axis. The unit determines a regression line closely fit to the point set and obtains the estimates of the vehicle body speed and friction coefficient from the intercept of the regression line on the coordinate axis of the wheel speed and the slope of the regression line.

    • A pinch detection system and method controls the speed of a motor moving an object by first calculating the actual motor force and then comparing the actual motor force with a reference force value in a reference field. A pinch condition is indicated if the difference between the actual force and the reference force exceeds a selected pinch threshold. The difference is also used to update the reference field, the pinch threshold and the desired speed of the motor so that the reference field will eventually reflect the actual force profile of the object. The updated pinch threshold is also used to control the motor speed so that the pinching force remains constant regardless of the pinch threshold value.

    • An output control system for an internal combustion engine includes an engine output lowering magnitude command component outputting a command indicative of a magnitude to lower the engine output, an engine operating condition judgement component responsive to an engine output control command to make a judgement at every combustion timing on whether a cylinder scheduled for next combustion is or is not to be placed into a resting state, a cylinder resting performing component for disabling combustion at the combustion timing for which resting is determined by the judgement component, and a storage for storing judgment results made by the judgement portion during a predetermined number of immediately preceding combustion timings. The judgement portion compares a command output by the engine output lowering magnitude command component and past judgement results stored in the storage portion, and makes a present judgement as to whether the cylinder scheduled for the next combustion is or is not to be placed in resting condition on the basis of a result of the comparison.
