摘要： A device and a method for judging the radial moving direction of light spots formed on the signal recording surface of an optical disc having grooves of two types, which are different from each other in terms of depth and which are arranged along a recording track that is a land of the optical disc. The judging section of the device judges the moving direction of the main spot on the basis of binarized data of a difference signal of the main spot and binarized data of a difference signal of one of spots on the side. With this arrangement, the moving direction of the light spots relative to a radial direction of the optical disc can be determined only by using difference signals without using any sum signal.

摘要： In an optical recording medium having a writable area in which grooves are formed along recording tracks and a read-only area in which pits are formed along the recording tracks, sufficient levels of signals required for data write and read can be assured even with the track pitch reduced for a higher recording density. Assuming that the refractive index of a medium provided extending from a light-incident surface to a surface in which the grooves and pits are formed is n and the wavelength of a light used for data write and read is &lgr;, the grooves and pits has a width within a range of &lgr;/7.5 n to &lgr;/6. On the assumption that the width of each of the grooves formed in the writable area is Wg and the pitch between the recording tracks in the writable area is Tp1, Wg/Tp1 is within a range of 18.4% to 31.1%. When it is assumed that the width of each of the pitches formed in the read-only area is Wp and the pitch between the recording tracks in the read-only area is Tp2, Wp/Tp2 is within a range of 35.7% to 44.3%.

Pits and grooves are arranged on a surface of a disc-shaped substrate so as to form a grooves and the ratio is from 1.00 exclusive to 1.13 inclusive. It is preferable that the track pitch of the grooves is from 1.50 &mgr;m inclusive to 1.70 &mgr;m exclusive. The width of the pits and grooves in the radial direction of the substrate is the same.
