    • Pumping cartridges useful for medical and surgical pumping and infusion procedures are disclosed. Methods for manufacturing and utilizing such pumping cartridges and methods for pumping or infusing liquids for delivery to the body of a patient or a surgical or medical instrument for performing a medical treatment are also described. The invention includes, in one aspect, a series of pumping cartridges comprising cylinders and pistons constructed and arranged for sliding or reciprocating motion within the cylinders. The pistons and/or cylinders can comprise a sealing component including a circumferential, flared sealing flange and can be configured to enable the pumping cartridge to generate high liquid pumping pressures, for example above 1,000 psig. Many of the pumping cartridges disclosed can be relatively easily manufactured at a low cost per unit and can be configured to be detachable from a pump drive unit and disposable after a single use. Various compact flow path configurations are provided in the several pumping cartridge embodiments described, including a Y-shaped configuration, a T-shaped configuration, and an axial configuration. Some pumping cartridges disclosed include pistons including or at least partially forming a valve and/or pistons that are relatively movable with respect to a piston rod to which they are connected. Valve including a valve seat and a movable sealing element able to create a seal capable of withstanding differences in fluid pressures thereacross of at least about 1,000 psi, and in some cases up to in excess of 10,000 psi, without substantial fluid leakage therethrough are disclosed. In some of the disclosed valves, the movable sealing element is concave in shape, and can be curved, to create a mechanical advantage for improved sealing performance. Methods for manufacturing axially-configured pumping cartridges from thin-walled tubing are also disclosed, as well as a series of methods for pumping or infusing a liquid for delivery to the body of a patient or a surgical or medical instrument for performing a medical treatment using the above-mentioned pumping cartridges and devices.

    • A mechanism advances to stretch an intraaortic balloon prior to insertion or removal. One embodiment includes a member which extends through a catheter from the handle to the balloon, and which advances to extend the balloon without appreciably twisting it. A spring detent assembly in the handle defines a precise amount of extension delivered by the member. The mechanism permits the balloon to be fully relaxed once it is inserted and to be recompacted, following use, for removal from the patient. The device is of particular utility for a large diameter, irregular or polygonal non-cylindrical balloon, and for inserting a balloon along an arterial path having a narrow passage or sharp curve.

    • The invention provides a variety of devices for supporting at least a portion of a user's body. In some embodiments, the invention provides a support device which includes a bladder capable of containing a fluid and a post adjacent the bladder. The bladder may form a rolling diaphragm portion with the post such that when a force is applied to the bladder, the rolling diaphragm portion of the bladder rolls along the post decreasing the volume of the bladder. In some embodiments, the invention provides a post which includes a reduced cross-sectional area in comparison to an adjacent region of the post such that the resistance of the rolling diaphragm portion of the bladder to rolling movement along the post due to the applies force decreases as the bladder rolls along the reduced cross-sectional area region.     • The invention provides a variety of surgical instruments for forming a liquid jet, which are useful for performing a wide variety of surgical procedures. In some embodiments, the invention provides surgical liquid jet instruments having a pressure lumen and an evacuation lumen, where the pressure lumen includes at least one nozzle for forming a liquid jet and where the evacuation lumen includes a jet-receiving opening for receiving the liquid jet when the instrument is in operation. The invention also provides a variety of surgical liquid jet instruments that are rotatably deployable from an undeployed position, for insertion into the body of a patient, to a deployed position, in which there is a separation distance between the liquid jet nozzle and the jet-receiving opening that defines a liquid jet path length.     • The present invention provides a series of devices useful for surgical procedures utilizing rotatable components for grinding, cutting, ablating, polishing, drilling, screwing, etc., tissues of the body of a patient. Some preferred instruments provided by the invention include both a liquid jet-driven rotor mechanism and a nozzle at the distal end of the instrument for forming a liquid cutting jet for cutting or ablating tissue of a patient. Such instruments can include a liquid flow directing valve therein that includes a pressure-tight sealing component comprising a sealing element that is constructed and arranged to be slidably moveable within a cylinder of the valve. The invention provides methods for utilizing the inventive surgical instruments in surgical procedures involving both cutting or ablating tissue of a patient with a liquid cutting jet and grinding, cutting, or ablating tissue with a rotating surface of a surgical instrument.

    • A periodontal probe has a probe finger extending from a handle to an L-shaped distal end which includes a tip adapted for insertion into a periodontal pocket and formed of a thermally insulative material. A temperature sensing element is mounted at the extreme end of the tip. Conductive leads extend from the sensing element, through the probe tip to the handle. In a preferred embodiment, the temperature sensor is a thermocouple or thermistor, and the tip is sealed within an epoxy outer skin. The tip tapers so that the thermal mass of the probe in the vicinity of the sensing element quickly attains the temperature of surrounding tissue while minimally perturbing that temperature. The handle may contain signal processing or temperature display units, and the probe tip preferably includes graduations for indicating probe depth. Interchangeable sensor matching circuit elements adapt sensor elements having different characteristics to a common display driver. A system includes a probe and a processor with a display which indicates periodontal site locations to prompt entry of temperature measurements and to display disease indications based on those measurements. The temperatures are processed and are compared to stored tables of temperature difference distributions, to provide site-specific tissue diagnosis.
