    • A positive displacement article sorter and method of monitoring a positive displacement article sorter, wherein the article sorter includes a frame, an endless web traveling in a longitudinal direction about the frame and an electric motor driving the endless web. The endless web is defined by a pair of continuous chains and a plurality of cross members connected at opposite ends with the chain. The positive displacement sorter includes a plurality of pusher shoes, each laterally traveling along at least one of the cross members. A sensing assembly is provided that has first and second portions. The first portion of said sensing assembly is positioned at the web. The second portion of said sensing assembly is positioned at a stationary location. The first portion of said sensing assembly is sensed with the second portion of the sensing assembly as the first portion of said sensing assembly travels about the frame. A parameter of the web is determined from an output of the sensing assembly.

    • A pulsed nmr analysis system for polymers materials extracted from industrial processes at a mobility enhancing temperature (at or above glass transition temperature for amorphous polymers, at the crystalline transition temperature for crystalline and semi-crystalline polymers). The sample is measured via nmr techniques and results correlated to viscosity and melt index or melt flow (which are related to average molecular weights). The nmr system (in or out of resonance) includes: sample throughput system (P, LI, V1, V2) and user system controls (104) to establish digitized free induction decay curves (C), from which components functions are determined using linear or non-linear regression techniques to correlate the curve components to the target nuclei and to flow rates in plastics. Substantial improvement of correlation of nmr derived constants and equations of a free induction decay curve with the foregoing polymer properties is obtained via (1) conducting the nmr process at a mobility enhancing temperature (normally elevated compared to the industrial process temperature of the industrial process) and (2) holding temperature substantially constant at such elevated temperature.

    • Apparatus and process for measuring mass flow of a slurry mixture of two components of materials, such as a flow of catalyst solid particles (the first component) or droplets in a fluid carrier (the second component). The slurry mixture is added to a process stream (10) or batch reactor. The flow velocity and the volume fraction of one component are measured and combined with the known specific gravity, of the component being measured, and the physical dimensions of the pipe, in which the slurry mixture is flowing, to determine the mass flow of the component. The flow velocity is measured by correlating signals at two separated locations along the flow path, and the volume fraction is measured by combining the known dielectric constants of each of the materials in the mixture and the measured capacitance of the mixture. The capacitance is measured from electrodes which may be isolated from the flowing materials in some applications, but not isolated from the flowing materials in other applications. The temperature (9) and pressure (11) are compensated in the final calculation, and the mass flow result is used to control, via feedback, the amount of such materials delivered. Also, a subtraction technique to remove interfering power line noise is implemented to improve sensitivity.

    • A method for producing a gas and a liquid in a subterranean well includes the step directing a gas flow in a well annulus through one or more baffle plates to separate at least some of the liquid from the gas. The method can also include the steps of directing the separated liquid down the annulus towards a producing formation of the well, dehydrating the gas flow proximate to a surface of the well, and then directing the dehydrated gas flow to the surface. A system for performing the method includes a set of baffle plates located proximate to the producing formation configured to provide a tortuous path for the gas flow through the annulus, and a single baffle plate located proximate to the surface configured to dehydrate the gas flow. In addition to separating the liquid from the gas flow, the set of baffle plates maintains a single phase wet gas above the baffle plates, and a liquid phase below the baffle plates.

    • A method is provided for maintaining threaded joints of a tool string to prevent jamming of the threads by rotation of a tool string required during movement of the tool string through a generally horizontal production portion and a curved bore portion of the well. Each thread joint is formed by use of an externally threaded pin and box configuration with the external diameter of the box substantially exceeding the external diameter of the pin. The cooperating threads are configured so that limited relative axial movement produces locking of cooperating threads against realtive rotation after full engagement. Relative axial movement is produced during makeup of the tool string by rotating a sleeve threadably mounted on the exterior of the pin and engagable to produce axial movement. The sleeve has an external diameter less than the box to prevent frictional engagement of the sleeve with the bore wall of the curved bore portion of the well.
