    • In a circuit for processing a video signal to be recorded, for example, in a VTR, as a frequency modulation of a relatively high frequency carrier, and in which, in advance of such frequency modulation and for the purpose of improving the signal-to-noise ratio particularly in respect to the so-called FM noise, the video signal is pre-emphasized and then clipped at a predetermined level for avoiding over-modulation; a compensating circuit responds to the pre-emphasized video signal for widening those overshoots thereof which are to be clipped and thereby avoiding waveform distortions that would otherwise occur at the locations of the clipped overshoots when the recorded signal is reproduced, frequency demodulated and then de-emphasized complementarily to the original pre-emphasis.

    • Head switching control apparatus for use in video signal processing apparatus of the type comprised of plural rotary transducer heads which scan successive tracks across a recording medium, each track having recorded therein a composite video signal. The head switching control apparatus functions to selectively connect individual transducer heads, one at a time, to video signal receiving circuitry. This head switching control apparatus is comprised of a position pulse generator for generating position pulses representing the relative positions of the transducer heads with respect to the recording medium. A bi-state circuit is conditioned in first and second states in response to successive position pulses. Switching circuitry is coupled to the transducer heads to electrically connect individual ones of the heads to the video signal receiving circuitry. A synchronizing signal separator is coupled to the video signal receiving circuitry and separates the equalizing signals included in the vertical blanking interval from the video signal. A switch pulse generator is coupled to the synchronizing signal separator and to the bi-state circuit and is responsive to the first and second states of the bi-state circuit for generating switch pulses which are synchronized with the separated equalizing signals. Thus, head switching noise is constrained to coincide with the equalizing signal to avoid false snyc signals.

    • A method of transmitting news data with script can simultaneously transmit video information and corresponding added information such as gathered news information to a news center from a news gathering field by use of an existing news transmission system. Digital video data, obtained by a video camera in a field, is timebase-compressed, and digital audio data is prepared on the basis of an audio signal. Added information such as script information is prepared as digital added information, and composite news data is generated by time-division-mixing these video data, audio data, and added information data. The composite news data is transmitted to a video receiving station by use of a news gathering system. In the video receiving station, the composite news data is time-division-distributed, and the time-division-distributed data is timebase-expanded, and combined with time-division-distributed audio data thereby to generate a video image signal. Simultaneously, a script, which is a broadcasting script, is generated from the time-division-distributed added information data.

    • When separating a composite video signal into a luminance signal component and the chrominance signal component by the use of filtering, a high frequency cross-talk component of the luminance signal is present in the chrominance signal and this may be cancelled using a horizontal correlator that imparts time delays and detects maximum and minimum levels relative to a reference level. In such luminance cross-talk cancellation by means of the horizontal correlator the usable chrominance signal length is shortened by almost one wave length out of four, thereby reducing the usable chrominance signal each time such luminance/chrominance signal separation occurs in a dubbing operation, for example. By utilizing two chroma separators in series each including a nonadditive mixer circuit, the resultant output from the second chroma separator circuit has substantially the same length as the portion of the composite video signal fed as the input. As a further safety factor in preventing the chrominance signal from being produced with excessive noise, a time delayed version of the composite video signal is level checked with the output of the second chroma separator unit and the signal having the lesser level is produced as the output.
