    • Disclosed is a metallic pigment composition which is stably dispersed in a water borne coating composition and which also provides with smooth coatings having superior water resistance. The metallic pigment composition comprises a metallic pigment and a phosphorous compound represented by the following formula (I) or (II); ##STR1## wherein l and 0 or 1, m is an integer of 1 to 4, R.sub.1, R.sub.2 R.sub.7 and R.sub.8 represent aliphatic, alicyclic or aromatic hydrocarbon groups which are the same or different, selected from a hydrogen atom, a C.sub.1 -C.sub.24 aliphatic hydrocarbon group, a C.sub.3 -C.sub.24 alicyclic hydrocarbon group or a C.sub.6 -C.sub.24 aromatic hydrocarbon group, and R.sub.1 has a valence of m, R.sub.3, R.sub.4, R.sub.5 and R.sub.6, which are the same or different, represent C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 aliphatic hydrocarbon group or a C.sub.6 or C.sub.7 aromatic hydrocarbon group, ##STR2## wherein n is 0, 1 or 2, p is an integer of 1 to 3, n+P equals 3, q is 0 or 1, R.sub.9, R.sub.14 and R.sub.15, which are the same or different, represent a hydrogen atom, a C.sub.1 -C.sub.24 aliphatic hydrocarbon group, a C.sub.3 -C.sub.24 alicyclic hydrocarbon group or a C.sub.6 -C.sub.24 aromatic hydrocarbon group, R.sub.10, R.sub.11, R.sub.12 and R.sub.13, which are the same or different, represent a C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 aliphatic hydrocarbon group or a C.sub.6 or C.sub.7 aromatic hydrocarbon group;the phosphorus compound being present in an amount of 0.5 to 200 parts by weight based on 100 parts by weight of the metallic pigment.The present invention also provides a water borne coating composition which contains the metallic pigment composition.

    • Disclosed is an aqueous metallic coating composition which significantly reduces the production of hydrogen gas and does not have the problems which are brought about from hydrophobic segments. The composition can be stored for a long period of time and provide a metallic coating having good appearance and film properties (e.g. water resistance and adhesive properties with substrates). The aqueous coating composition of the present invention comprises(a) an acryl resin having a number average molecular weight of 1,000 to 50,000, an acid value of 15 to 200 and a hydroxyl value of 20 to 200, prepared by copolymerizing an ethylenic monomer and a phosphate monomer represented by ##STR1## [wherein X represents a hydrogen atom or a methyl group, Y represents an alkylene group having 2 to 4 carbon atoms and n is an integer of 3 to 30.] and(b) a pigment;the acryl resin being present in an amount of 2 to 500 parts by weight, based on 100 parts by weight of the pigment.

    • An anticorrosive metal surface pretreating composition comprising:(a) an emulsion of polymer particles comprising at least one .alpha., .beta.-ethylenically unsaturated monomers, bearing thereon, as protective colloid, an oligomer with hydrophylic groups comprising at least one .alpha.,.beta.-ethylenically unsaturated monomer, the mean diameter of the particles being 0.1 to 3.mu. and the particles being formed as hard microparticles through internal gelation or having a glass transition point from 15.degree. to 110.degree. C., and(b) a water soluble chromium compound, 25 to 50% by weight of the total chromium contained being of trivalent, the weight ratio of said emulsion solid to metallic chromium being 1:10.about.5:1. The present composition affords a pretreatment coating with improved anticorrosive, bending and scratch resistant properties on various metallic substrates.

    • A method for producing a water dispersible resin composition, comprising radically polymerizing, in the presence of a polymerization initiator, a starting mixture comprising (a) 10 to 95% by weight of a water insoluble resin having a solubility in water of not more than 1; and (b) 5 to 90% by weight of a monomer mixture which comprises (1) 2 to 75% by weight of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer having an acid group, and (2) 25 to 98% by weight of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer other than (1); and neutralizing the resulting resin composition containing an acid group by adding a neutralizing agent. A coating composition is provided which is stable and excellent in coating workability and has improved storage stability and solid components content of the coating composition. Since particles excellent in dispersibility improve the uniformity of a coated film, transparency, smoothness, chemical resistance, water resistance and mechanical strength of the coated film are also improved.
