    • An apparatus for maintaining a recording head which has a nozzle opening in a nozzle-defining surface thereof, and ejects, from the nozzle, a droplet of an ink toward a recording medium, in a state in which the recording head is separate from a remaining portion of a recording device. The apparatus includes a cover member which is adapted to air-tightly contact the recording head to cover the nozzle-defining surface of the recording head such that a space is formed between the cover member and the nozzle-defining surface. The apparatus further includes a selectively communicating device which can selectively take (a) a first state thereof in which the selectively communicating device allows the space to communicate with an atmosphere so that substantially no difference is produced between an air pressure in the space and an atmospheric pressure, when the cover member is air-tightly contacted with the recording head; and (b) a second state thereof in which the selectively communicating device shuts off the communication between the space and the atmosphere, and thereby air-tightly closes the space, after the cover member is air-tightly contacted with the recording head.

    • An ink-jet printer performs formation of an image by jetting an ink from nozzles of an ink-jet head. When a power supply is switched ON after a time measuring section is not capable of measuring time due to the power supply has been switched OFF, then the ink-jet printer outputs to a display section a signal which causes a display control section, provided on a controller, to display a message asking a user whether or not a cleaning operation by a recovery operation control section is to be performed. Accordingly, any unnecessary operation for recovering the jetting function is reduced, solving problems such as waiting time required for performing the operation for recovering the jetting function and that the ink is consumed unnecessarily.

The control unit includes a measuring unit for measuring a value indicating a recording amount of recording performed on the recording medium. The control unit is configured to change a first predetermined gap to a second predetermined gap larger than the first predetermined gap when a specified timing at which a value indicating the recording amount exceeds a predetermined value arrives after the cleaner has cleaned the nozzle surface.

    • An ink-jet head includes a plurality of pressure chambers arranged in a paper feeding direction, and two manifold channels extended along the paper feeding direction. The manifold channel includes a first area which communicates with the pressure chambers, and a second area which is connected to an end of the first area, on a side opposite to an ink inflow port, and communicates with a plurality of dummy nozzles. A width of the second area is more than a width of the first area, and an acoustic capacitance of the second area, per unit length in the paper feeding direction is higher than an acoustic capacitance of the first area, per unit length in the paper feeding direction. Accordingly, it is possible to attenuate efficiently a pressure wave in the manifold channel.
