    • The electrophotographic copying machines are of the type in which a photosensitive drum is removable from the machine, for inspection or other purposes, through an opening formed in a sidewall, which opening is normally covered by a coverplate. Plural cleaning devices which are normally maintained in pressing engagement with the peripheral drum surface, are automatically released from such engagement once the coverplate has been dismounted from the sidewall and also returned to the original position as the coverplate is remounted, thereby preventing damage of the drum as well as a wrong usage of the machine which may be caused by inadvertently failing to reset each cleaning device. The construction is further effective to adjust the respective forces with which the cleaning devices are pressed against the peripheral drum surface and moreover to deenergize a motor or motors, for driving the drum and/or other movable parts, as the cleaning devices are lifted from engagement with the drum surface, thereby permitting an inspection of such movable parts in operation even after the coverplate has been dismounted from the sidewall.

    • A developing unit for use with an electrophotographic copying apparatus of the type comprising a developing electrode and at least one corona discharger includes a conductive member arranged within a shield casing of the discharger for obtaining a voltage to be applied to the developing electrode as a bias voltage thereto. In the case where an a.c. discharger for charge elimination is being used in addition to the primary discharger, conductive members are incorporated with respective dischargers and the outputs from the conductive members are superimposed on each other and applied to the developing electrode. In this instance, the output of the conductive member associated with the a.c. discharger is continuously applied to the developing electrode after the de-energization of the primary discharger, i.e., the completion of developing an electrostatic latent image to thereby prevent the deposition of toner on the developing electrode.

    • An exposure unit radiates a light image of an original document onto a charged photoconductive member to form an electrostatic image through localized photoconduction. A developing unit applies a powdered developing substance comprising carrier particles and toner particles to the photoconductive member to develop the electrostatic image and produce a toner image which is transferred and fixed to a copy sheet to produce a permanent reproduction of the original document. The tone density, or the ratio of toner particles to carrier particles in the developing substance is electromagnetically measured, and the developing ability of the developing substance is opticaly measured. The developing substance is replaced when the difference between the toner density and developing ability exceeds a predetermined value. Prior to exposure with the light image a reference electrostatic image is formed on the photoconductive member and the electrostatic potential thereof is measured. The intensity of the light image of the original document and/or a developing bias voltage are regulated in accordance with the sensed electrostatic potential. The reference image may be of a reference surface having a predetermined optical density or a portion of the original document produced by reverse optical scanning.

    • The process and device are for use in an electrophotographic copying machine using a developing agent of liquid type. A counter-electrode is maintained closely spaced from the peripheral surface of a photosensitive drum bearing an electrostatic latent image thereon and itself electrically floating. The developing solution, which inherently has a substantial conductivity is supplied into the space between the drum surface and the counter-electrode so as to develop the latent image. During the development of latent image, a weak d.c. current flow, is passed between the counter-electrode and the drum through the segment of the developing solution filling the space so that a good relation between potentials on the drum surface and the counter-electrode is obtained to eliminate background smearing. The d.c. current may be controlled to decrease in value as the induced potential on the counter-electrode increases.
