    • Proposed is an improvement in the method for the preparation of a battery electrode consisting of a spongy metal sheet to serve as a substrate having a three-dimensional skeletal structure with intercommunicating open pores and an active material filling the open pores of the skeletal structure of the substrate. While the conventional process comprises the steps of imparting electroconductivity to the surface of the skeleton of a foamed resin sheet, forming a plating layer of a metal on the surface of the foamed resin imparted with conductivity and removing the resin by thermal decomposition to leave the metallic plating layer alone followed by impregnation of the open pores with a pasty active material, the improvement of the invention comprises subjecting the foamed resin sheet, prior to the step of imparting the resin surface with electroconductivity, to a low temperature plasma treatment so as to remove the spiky fragments or dendritic protrusions of the resin on the surface of the skeleton so that the impregnating work of the skeletal space of the spongy metal sheet with a pasty active material is greatly facilitated and the durability of the battery prepared by using the battery electrode is remarkably increased. Further, an additional improvement can be obtained by forming the metallic plating layer on the foamed resin skeleton having a larger thickness in the marginal areas of the foamed resin sheet than in the center area surrounded by the marginal areas.

    • Proposed is an improvement in the process for forming a superhard carbonaceous coating film on various articles by the plasma-induced CVD method using an apparatus in which microwaves generated in an oscillator are introduced into the CVD chamber through a waveguide duct partitioned from the CVD chamber by a gas shield. In the apparatus used according to the invention, a microwave-barrier diaphragm having an orifice of a limited open area is provided between the gas shield in the waveguide duct and the CVD chamber to form a plasma-generating zone between the gas shield and the microwave-barrier diaphragm so that the intensity of the microwaves directly entering the CVD chamber is so limited that the carbonaceous coating film deposited on the substrate surface can be imparted with greatly increased luster and clarity along with an advantage that the substrate article is subjected to less thermal damage by virtue of the decreased temperature elevation by virtue of the limited intensity of the microwaves reaching the substrate.

    • A rust preventive composition including (a) a silicic acid compound and (b) an aromatic amine-based condensation product is provided, which is effective in preventing a Zn-based metallic coating from rusting. Rusting is prevented by forming a coating film contaning the components (a) and (b) on the surface of the Zn-based metallic coating formed on a base such as a metal plate. The resulting coating film exhibits an excellent corrosion resistance, gives no fear of a health problem such as carcinogensis and provides a desirable black or blackish appearance to a metal surface. In an embodiment wherein a second coating film containing a silicic acid compound is formed on the first coating film, the corrosion resistance is further improved.
