    • An intake port device comprises an intake port (9) formed by a straight part (13) and a helical part (15), and a valve (17) disposed adjacent to the inlet of the intake port. In order that intake air flow having a large swirl ratio can be supplied to an engine without being encountered with a large resistance even in a light-loaded condition of the engine, the valve (17) is held in its closed position without causing any sharp decrease in the coefficient of intake air flow when closed. In a modification of the intake port device, the valve (17) holds open the lower half of the intake port 9 in its closed position, so that intake air flow having a large swirl ratio can be supplied without being encounted with a large resistance even when the load of the engine is light. In another modification of the intake port device, the free end of the valve (17) is bent and deformed in the downstream direction of intake air so that the flow of intake air may not be encountered with a large resistance.

    • The disclosed pump includes a casing housing a working chamber and an impeller. The impeller includes a blade wheel mounted on a rotational shaft, a plurality of pumping blades extending axially from the periphery of the blade wheel and a cover mounted within the casing and fitted over the blade wheel for rotation therewith. The cover includes an end face member defining one side of the working chamber and a cylindrical skirt portion depending from the periphery of the end face member and encircling the blade wheel and defining a hollow interior space within the impeller between the end face member and the blade wheel. The end face member has a plurality of slots through which the blades extend into the working chamber. The interior surface of the cover defines a plurality of pockets, each contoured to receive and mate with one of the blades so that in use each blade rests flush against one surface of the pocket with no space for fluid therebetween.

    • A catalytic converter apparatus for reducing pollutants from an engine having a plurality of cylinders. The converter apparatus has an upper casing for mounting on the engine and branch pipes extending to the engine and through which exhaust gas discharged from the respective cylinders in the engine is led. A lower casing is connected to the upper casing for forming an exhaust manifold in cooperation with the upper casing. The lower casing has a discharge port for the exhaust gas. A catalyst casing is disposed within the exhaust manifold and has a support member extending therefrom and held between abutting surfaces of the upper and lower casings. Bolts are inserted through the casings from above the upper casing for coupling the upper and lower casings to each other and clamping the support member therebetween.
