    • In an apparatus for recording and/or reproducing, in successive slant tracks on a record tape, an information signal comprised of at least an audio signal and an index signal for use in controlling transportation of the tape; the input audio signal is converted to a digitized form in which the audio data for a predetermined length of time is grouped as a plurality of data blocks which are recorded by a rotary head in a first part of a respective slant track on the tape, an index signal generator provides a coded index signal to indicate respective input information, such as, an absolute tape-position address counted from a predetermined reference position on the record tape, an index area signal is generated in predetermined timed relation to scanning by the rotary head of said first part of each slant track, and a control is responsive to the index area signal for supplying the coded index signal to a rotary head for recording by the latter in a second part of said respective slant track which is located adjacent an end of said first part of the respective slant track.

    • Apparatus for recording and reproducing an information signal comprised of a video signal and an audio signal in a plurality of successive tracks on a magnetic tape, includes a recording section comprised of a PCM processor which converts the audio signal to a PCM audio signal and compresses the same, a dummy signal generator for compensating for tape jitter by generating a dummy signal and supplying the same to the PCM processor where the dummy signal is added both before and after each portion of the compressed PCM audio signal to be recorded in an overscan section of each track, and a magnetic head assembly which records the video signal in a main section of each track and each portion of the compressed PCM audio signal and dummy signal added thereto in the overscan section of each track; and a reproducing section comprised of a magnetic head assembly which scans the tracks to reproduce the information signal recorded therein, a switch assembly which separates the video signal reproduced from the main section of each track and the PCM audio signal reproduced from the overscan section of each track; a PCM processor which converts the PCM audio signal to the original analog audio signal and a timing signal generator for compensating for tape jitter by enabling the PCM processor only during a period slightly greater than the period of the PCM audio signal recorded in the overscan section of each track.

    • A reproducing section of a helical scan VTR for reproducing a color television signal recorded in a plurality of successive parallel tracks on a magnetic tape and comprised of a video signal and at least one of a frequency-modulated audio signal and the combination of a PCM audio signal and run-in signal, with the video signal and frequency-modulated audio signal being recorded only in a main section of each track and the PCM audio signal being recorded only in an overscan section of each track, the VTR including a pair of magnetic heads which scan the tracks to reproduce the information signal recorded therein; a pair of switch circuits connected to the heads and which separate the information signal reproduced during scanning of the main section of each track and a signal reproduced during scanning of the overscan section of each track; a detector which detects the presence or absence of a run-in signal from the separated signal reproduced during scanning of the overscan section of each track and produces a detection signal in response thereto; an output; and a switch for switching an analog audio signal reproduced from the PCM audio signal to the output in response to the detection signal when a run-in signal is detected and an analog audio signal reproduced from the frequency-modulated audio signal to the output in response to the detection signal when no run-in signal is detected.
