    • A valve control device for an internal combustion engine includes a rotational cam shaft disposed on a cylinder head, a first cam provided on the cam shaft, a second cam provided on the cam shaft and having a larger nose portion than that of the first cam, a first rocker arm supported on a first fulcrum so as to be able to oscillate and thereby open or close an intake or exhaust valve by the first cam in response to the rotation of the cam shaft, a second rocker arm supported on a second fulcrum so as to be able to oscillate and thereby open or close an intake or exhaust valve by the second cam in response to the rotation of the cam shaft, and a moving mechanism for selectively moving the second fulcrum so as to control the opening and closing operation of the intake or exhaust valve by the second rocker arm.

    • A hydraulic valve lifter is used in the valve train of an internal combustion engine to take up the lash on operating clearance in the valve train. The valve lifter is comprised of a first cylindrical body member having a top wall, a second cylindrical body member slidably mounted within the first body member and having a bottom wall, a plunger member slidably mounted within the second body member for defining a reservoir chamber and a pressure chamber, a guide member of thick, rigid material fixed in the first body member for guiding the second body member, and a channel member of thin light weight material fixed between the first body member and the guide member for defining an oil channel connected to the reservoir chamber.

    • A self-contained hydraulic lash adjuster having a cup-shaped body and a plunger slidably disposed therein is further provided with a flexible diaphragm secured within a reservoir chamber located in the plunger with one side of said diaphragm being exposed to the atmosphere and the other side being disposed in engagement with the oil supply sealed within the hydraulic lash adjuster. An oil passage is provided in the bottom of the plunger to communicate the reservoir chamber with a pressure chamber defined between the bottom of the plunger and the bottom of the body and a one-way check valve is provided to prevent the return flow of oil through the oil passage to the reservoir. A cup-shaped cover member having apertured side walls is located in the bottom of the plunger over the oil passage to prevent the diaphragm from blocking the oil passage upon deformation of the diaphragm.

    • A self-contained hydraulic lash adjuster which does not depend upon any external source of hydraulic fluid in operation is used in the valve trains of internal combustion engines or similar mechanisms in order to take up the lash or operating clearance in the valve trains. In the lash adjuster a transmitting member such as a fulcrum is engaged with a plunger which is slidably mounted in a bore of a lash adjuster body. A clearance is provided between the transmitting member and the body which is smaller than the clearance provided between the transmitting member and the plunger to reduce the frictional wear between the plunger and the body.

    • A self-contained hydraulic lash adjuster, which does not depend upon any external source of hydraulic fluid in operation, is used in the valve trains of internal combustion engines in order to take up the lash or operating clearance in the valve trains. The lash adjuster comprises a cylinder member, a plunger member slidably fitted therein, said cylinder and plunger members defining a fluid pressure chamber between each end wall thereof, said plunger member forming a reservoir chamber therewithin, and an elastic bag member disposed within the reservoir chamber, the inner wall surface of said elastic bag member being normally in communication with atmospheric pressure while the outer wall surface thereof being normally in contact with the fluid in the reservoir chamber.
