    • A head carriage apparatus includes a head carriage including a head being placed onto a disk for recording and reproducing information on the disk and having an extension and a connecting portion formed on the extension integrally with the head carriage, a lead-screw shaft having a lead screw in which a thread ridge and a thread groove are formed, the connecting portion being fitted in the thread groove of the lead screw, a drive part for driving and rotating the lead-screw shaft so that the head carriage is moved in a radial direction of the disk parallel to an axial direction of the lead-screw shaft, a guide shaft for guiding movement of the head carriage in a direction parallel to the radial direction of the disk, the head carriage being supported by the guide shaft at two supporting positions being located apart from each other in axial direction of the guide shaft, and a resilient part for pressing the lead-screw shaft in a direction facing the head carriage, the resilient part being fixed at one end onto the head carriage, the other end of the resilient part being brought into contact with the lead-screw shaft at a position corresponding with respect to the axial direction of the lead-screw shaft to a position at which the connecting portion is fitted in the thread groove of the lead-screw shaft. One of the two supporting points of the guide shaft is displaced to a forwardly moved point in order to downsize a disk drive unit in which the head carriage apparatus is accommodated.

    • A rotary to linear converter is disclosed as adapted for use as a transducer positioning mechanism in a magnetic disk drive wherein a transducer is transported across a series of concentric data storage tracks on a disklike record medium for accessing the individual tracks. A band of flexible, nonstretchable material such as stainless steel is looped about a pulley on a bidirectional drive motor shaft, with the opposite end portions of the band extending tangentially away from the pulley. The opposite ends of the band are anchored to a carriage, carrying the transducer, at points spaced from each other in the direction in which the carriage is to be moved reciprocably upon bidirectional rotation of the drive motor. While one end of the band may be coupled directly to the carriage, the other end is coupled thereto via a generally U-shaped spring member which is biased for imparting tension to the band at the time of assemblage. The band is medially secured to the pulley as by a threaded fastener element extending through a clearance hole in the band.

    • A rotary to linear converter is disclosed in a flexible magnetic disk drive environment for translating the bidirectional, incremental rotation of a stepping motor into the linear stepwise displacement of a head carriage. A flexible, nonstretchable band is looped about a pulley nonrotatably mounted on the motor output shaft and is affixed thereto. Extending generally in opposite directions away from the pulley, the opposite ends of the band are apertured or otherwise adapted for engagement with respective hooks on the head carriage. Each hook has a substantially arcuate contact surface for direct engagement with the correspondingly shaped edge of the band defining the associated aperture, so that each end portion of the band is angularly displaceable in its own plate about the associated hook on the head carriage. Spring tensioned in its longitudinal, the band automatically aligns itself by simple engagement of the carriage hooks with its opposite ends. The hooks have overhangs for preventing the accidental detachment of the band.
