    • A method and an apparatus for writing information on a magnetic disk by a single-gap magnetic head, wherein information is first written on a selected track and then the written information is partially erased along opposite edges of the written band. Alternatively, previously written information is first partially erased along one of opposite edges of the previously written band, then new information is written on the selected track, and the newly written information is partially erased along one of opposite edges of the newly written band remote from the above-indicated erased edge of the previously band information. In another alternative form, the previously written information is partially erased along opposite edges of the written band, and then new information is written on the selected track.

    • An information recording system comprising a read/write device including a read/write head for reading and writing information from and on a rotatable data-storage medium rotated by a first drive motor, and electrically operated elements such as a second drive motor for moving the read/write head relative to the data-storage medium, reading and writing amplifiers, and detectors for sensing operating conditions of the recording system such as the angular position of the data-storage medium. Electric power is supplied to such electrically operated elements from a power source via power disconnect switches connected between the power source and the respective electrically operated elements for selective power supply to the individual elements. The recording system further comprises a control device connected to the disconnect switches for controlling their operations in order to connect the power source to the respective elements only while the operation of the elements are required, and disconnect the elements from the power source when the operations of the elements are not required.

    • A method of writing information on a magnetic disk having a multiplicity of concentric recording tracks on a recording surface thereof, each track having sectors each of which includes a sector-identification field, and a data field on which the information is written. Initially, a magnetic head is positioned at a first erase position away from a centerline of selected one of the tracks by a predetermined distance in one of radially inward and outward directions of the disk. After reading the sector-identification field of selected one of the sectors of the selected track, the magnetic head is activated to perform a first erasing operation on the data field of the selected sector. Then, the head is moved to a second erase position away from the centerline by a predetermined distance in the other radial direction, and is activated to perform a second erasing operation on the same data field, after the sector-identification field has been raised. The head is then moved to the centerline of the selected track, and activated to write the information on the erased data field, after the sector-identification field has been read.
