摘要： A method for locating a mobile device in a wireless communications system comprised of a plurality of base stations is provided. The method comprises associating the mobile device with a first base station of the plurality of base stations. Thereafter, a paging signal is delivered from a subset of base stations associated with the first base station to the mobile device. The subset of base stations may correspond to a network active set of base stations associated with the mobile device. Thereafter, when a signal from one of the base stations in the subset of base stations is received, indicating that the mobile device responded to the paging signal from the one base station, then the mobile device is located and may be associated with the one base station for future paging attempts.

摘要： In one aspect of the present invention, a method for controlling a communications session with a mobile device is provided. The method comprises selecting a plurality of base stations, where at least a portion of the base stations are adapted to operate as a secondary agent, and wherein the secondary agent is capable of communicating with a mobile device. Substantially similar data is then delivered to a plurality of the secondary agents, and a first one of the secondary agents is selected as a first serving secondary agent to communicate with the mobile device. The first serving secondary agent transfers the data to the mobile device during the communications session.

摘要： A method for controlling a wireless communications system is provided. A plurality of substantially identical base stations, each capable of being operated as both a primary agent and a secondary agent are deployed. The secondary agent is capable of communicating with a mobile device and the primary agent is capable of communicating with a network. A network active set associated with a mobile device is formed from a plurality of the base stations. One of the base stations in the network active set is selected to operate as the primary agent, and it communicates to the other base stations that the selected base station is operating as the primary agent. Thus, communications between the network and the mobile device are routed through the primary agent and the selected secondary agent.

摘要： A hierarchical assignment manager (HAM) improves system throughput in a hierarchical overlay network by taking into account the requested data rates in addition to or instead of the velocities of mobile users within the network. The user population is characterized by the statistical description of their user profiles. The entire set of profiles is partitioned along assignment curves into two or more subsets, where each subset corresponds to the assignment to a particular layer of a hierarchical network. The HAM determines assignment curves to optimize the total effective system throughput in a systematic way and can be adapted to time-varying user behavior and profiles. The HAM can be used to decide upon assignment strategies between different layers of an overlay architecture, between different available network technologies, or between competing service providers.

摘要： Techniques for transmission control in a wireless communication system are described. In a system comprising a plurality of voice and data users, a threshold is set reflecting a minimum gain at which a data user will be allowed to transmit. At each of a plurality of time slots, the circumstances, including the instantaneous gains, of all data users are evaluated and the data user having the highest priority is selected as a candidate for transmission. If the candidate for transmission experiences a gain meeting the gain threshold, the candidate is directed to transmit at a power level inversely proportional to the gain. If the candidate for transmission does not experience a gain meeting the threshold, the candidate is inhibited from transmission.
