    • The present invention enables eye contact between conferees during a teleconference using a terminal equipped with a beamsplitter for reflecting an image of a video display so that only the reflection and not a direct view of the display is seen by the conferee. The camera is positioned behind the viewing side of the beamsplitter to capture the conferee's image through the beamsplitter. The direct view of the display is blocked by an image blocking film applied between the beamsplitter and the display. Blocking the direct view of the video display greatly improves teleconferencing by eliminating the distraction of simultaneously viewing both the video display and the reflection of the display. The present invention also substantially improves available desktop space, functional options by providing a direct view and a reflected view of the display, and portability. Also, the present invention is an integrated device operating as a fully functional personal computer with a module bay which receives a videoconferencing module to enable a videoconference. The integrated terminal is also uniquely configured for both a single user mode and a group videoconferencing mode.

    • A teleconferencing system that allows for natural eye contact between conferees is provided. The system comprises two or more terminals which are connected to allow a teleconference to occur. Each terminal comprises a screen to display an image of the remote conferee and a video camera to transmit an image of the local conferee to the remote screen. The video camera is conveniently located above the screen, beyond the perimeter of the image. Microphones and speakers are also provided to allow the conferees to hear as well as speak to one another. Eye contact is provided, despite the mounting of the camera above eye level, by image manipulating the image of a conferee to remove any distortion caused by camera placement and to redirect the apparent direction of the conferee's gaze. Image manipulation can also simulate zooming, tilting and panning of the camera by expanding that portion of the camera field that frames the conferee to fill the entire screen and by keeping the conferee's image so centered in spite of movement by the conferee.

    • The present invention enables eye contact between conferees during a teleconference using a terminal equipped with a beamsplitter for reflecting an image of a conferee. In one embodiment the image of the conferee appears to be in a backdrop. The display is positioned behind the viewing side of the beam-splitter so that the conferee views the display through the beamsplitter. The invention can be configured to create the appearance that a life-size teleconference image of a remote conferee appears in the same room as the local conferee apparently sitting on the other side of the desk or table—creating the experience of telepresence with eye contact. Additional embodiments include adaptable features of the present invention which enable it to be configured into many specific types of eye contact display products. The invention further teaches the design of a telepresence network, linking numerous terminals sharing a commonality in configuration. The invention also includes many additional versatility embodiments for desktop and group videoconferencing, as well as other videoconferencing applications.
