    • A method is provided for retrofitting an existing dead-bolt assembly with an electrically operated actuator (12, 112, 212, 312, 800). The electrically operated actuator automatically operates the dead-bolt assembly while preserving manual operation of the lock. The actuator assembly has rotating means for rotation of the drive bar (18), which in turn extends or retracts the bolt (14) of the lock. The rotating means may be a lever (28, 128, 238, 328, 438, 818) attached to the drive bar (18) that is pivotable about the axis of rotation of the drive bar (18). The actuator assembly has driving means that forces the rotating means to rotate. The driving means is responsive to an electrical signal, which, for example, may be initiated from a remote-controlled transmitter (502, 602). The driving means may include a motor (20, 120, 220) for rotating a rod (22, 122, 222, 322) that in turn operates an assembly that rotates or drives the rotating means. In response to an electrical signal, the driving means actuates the rotating means to affect either a locking or unlocking operation, which operations are always completed by placing the actuator assembly in a state whereby the bolt of the lock may subsequently be extended or retracted manually, or automatically by the driving means.

    • A digitally programmed computer takes as input a schematic of a mechanical system and specification of the overall system including utility and cost functions and provides as output catalog numbers from a pre-defined set for the optimal selection of working components implementing the design. The preferred embodiment provides the user with a high level symbolic language in which to interact with the programmed computer. The process of compilation or transformation from a high level language to a low level description, is based on a formalization of quantitative inferences about hierarchically organized sets of mechanical components and operating conditions. This method allows design compilation without the exhaustive enumeration of alternatives. This method of compilation as demonstrated in the preferred embodiment, is not limited to mechanical systems, but is applicable to any physical system composed of working components able to be defined by connected variables that can be clearly defined within various operating points and where the goal is to design an overall system achieving some pre-defined system requirements.

    • An apparatus for determining assignments to attributes (e.g., electrical power or overall dimensional size) of components within a system. A computerized constraint network is constructed which uses constraint agents, variable agents, and task agents in order to make assignments to the attributes of the components based upon market-based constraint optimization techniques. The attributes have variables indicative of the assignments to the attributes. Constraint data structures assist the agents in determining permissible assignments for the variables. The constraint data structures use preferential rules for determining the assignments to the variables. The preferential rules indicate which assignments for the variables of the agents produce higher utility and lower cost.

    • This invention relates to a machine tool providing a unique approach towards positioning and movement for a workpiece and tool in numerical control machine tool applications. The goal is to provide decrease machine costs and maintenance. Current machine tools such as milling machines principally rely on linear sliding mechanisms to position a table and workpiece relative to a spindle and provide motion for cutting. In accordance with this invention motion and positioning is achieved through less cost and readily available mechanisms through use of a plurality of revolute joints. Arms are provided having tangential actuators featuring extremely high stiffness and zero backlash actuator capable of a high degree of positioning accuracy. The arms resemble three dimensional truss structures for added structural stiffness characteristics. Preferably a cable drum type tangential actuator is employed in conjunction with this invention. A number of revolute arms can be linked together each providing revolute motion about offset axes to provide number of degrees of revolute motion required for a given application.
