    • A monolithic capacitive differential pressure transducer (10, 44,) is shown composed of ceramic material having first and second cavities formed adjacent to opposed face surfaces to form first and second flexible diaphragms (12, 14; 50, 52) and a motion transfer pin (24, 58) attached to and extending between the diaphragms. Capacitor plates are disposed on a surface of at least one flexible diaphragm and a stationary member to form a capacitive gap. Component parts are first pressed from ceramic powder and assembled into a unit using one of several methods including relatively high pressure to press them together or using a combination of low pressure along with raising the temperature of the material to soften the binder in the ceramic material at surfaces of the parts which are to be joined together. Selected gaps, both along the x-y direction and along the z direction may be obtained, particularly in assembling the parts using high pressure using consumable spacer material which is sublimated in a debinderization cycle prior to sintering of the unit to form a monolithic body.

    • An accelerometer unit has a capacitor detect plate and a source place connector preferably defined respectively inside and outside a groove in one surface of a ceramic substrate. A flat metal member has an attachment portion secured in electrically conductive relation to the connector, has a source plate portion spaced over the detect plate to form a capacitor, and has integral resilient beams extending from the attachment portion to support the source plate portion spaced from the detect plate to be movable relative to the detect plate in response to acceleration force to provide an electrical signal. Preferably glass rods between the attachment member portion and source place connector facilitate the spacing. An electrically insulating housing base has integral pins extending through openings in the accelerometer unit substrate and in a separate electrical circuit unit to mount the circuit unit in spaced, overlying relation to the accelerometer unit, and an electrically conductive adhesive extends through guide holes in a gasket between the accelerometer and circuit units to electrically connect the circuit to the detect plate and to the connector on the ceramic substrate.

    • A supplementary heating system particularly suitable for an automotive vehicle comprises a step down transformer coupled to the stator windings of the vehicle's alternator and a positive temperature coefficient (PTC) of resistivity heater electrically connected intermediate the stator windings and the transformer in parallel with the transformer. Due to the presence of the transformer the voltage regulator causes the alternator to operate at a higher than customary voltage to provide the conventional 14.4 volts for the vehicle's normal electrical loads with the high voltage used to energize the heater. The heater can be in the form of a so-called "honeycomb" having a plurality of parallely extending passages or cells disposed in the air stream going from the main heater into the passenger compartment and can be either a multiphase, single phase or direct current type. In one embodiment the transformer is switched into and out of electrical the transformer is alternator dependent on the energization of the heater, while in another embodiment the transformer is always electrically coupled to the alternator with the heater switched into and out of the circuit as desired.

    • A dual function sensor particularly useful with vehicular coolant systems indicates when a coolant liquid becomes corrosive to such cooling system materials as well as when the liquid falls to a low level condition. A reference and a sense electrode are used to probe the condition of the coolant liquid. Integral electronics provide signal conditioning and transmitting to indicate both corrosive and low level coolant conditions. The sensor assembly mounted directly onto a tubular coupling on the vehicle radiator by pushing the assembly onto the coupling until a spring wire element snaps past a lip formed on the free distal end of the coupling. An electrical connector shroud extends from the assembly and accommodates a mating male connector which is pushed onto the shroud until a clip mounted on the male connector snaps over a locking tab located on the shroud. The male connector typically is connected to an engine control module (ECM).

    • A universal sensor has a selectivity scaled condition responsive element such as a capacitive pressure transducer mounted on a common support with signal conditioning means embodied in an integrated circuit to provide a control signal precisely corresponding to a sensed condition. Electrically actuatable means on the support are incorporated in the circuit for low cost, mass producible calibration of the circuit and condition-responsive element relative to each other after assembly on the common support. Preferably, a capacitive pressure transducer and a reference capacitor are arranged in a charge-locked loop relation with a common node while an array of switches cycles the voltage across the transducer and reference capacitors with opposite transitions with a predetermined frequency so change in transducer capacitance results in a differential voltage at the common node. That voltage is amplified to drive a current source-sink-integrate network and adjust sensor output voltage to restore a balanced condition at the common node and maintain sensor output voltage at a level inversely proportional to transducer capacitance. The sensor is adapted for calibration to provide an electrical calibration signal for actuating calibration means such as electrically settable potentiometers, or serially programmed digital-to-analog converters or the like to provide bias and gain and non-linearity calibration in the sensor. In one embodiment, calibration is achieved by adjustment of variable capacitors.
