摘要： A developing device for an image forming apparatus of the present invention includes an image carrier performing endless movement while carrying a developer in the form of a layer thereon, and a regulating member for regulating the thickness of the layer. Toner stored in the developing device is covered with an additive whose particle size is less than 2 &mgr;m. The regulating member is implemented as a doctor roller having a surface roughness Rz equal to or greater than the above particle size, but smaller than 2 &mgr;m. The doctor roller is pressed against a developing roller or developer carrier by a preselected pressure, forming a nip for development. The developing device reduces irregular development ascribable to impurities caught at a regulating position assigned to the doctor roller more than a conventional developing device using a doctor blade as a regulating member. In addition, the developing device obviates irregular development in the form of fine stripes ascribable to stripe-like irregularities formed in the developer layer existing on the developing roller.

摘要： A development apparatus includes a development roller, a supplying roller, and a toner layer regulating member. The development roller contacts an image carrying member and develops an electrostatic latent image into a toner image on the image carrying member. The development roller may be made of aluminum and is rotatably mounted in the apparatus. The supplying roller supplies toner to the development roller. The toner layer regulating member regulates the toner to form a thin film on the development roller. The toner layer regulating member has a roller shape, a surface roughness Rz in a range of from 0.5 &mgr;m to 2 &mgr;m, and a dynamic friction coefficient in a range of from 0.1 to 0.8.

摘要： An image forming apparatus including a plurality of image forming units or process units is disclosed. The process units may each be moved into and out of the body of the apparatus by hand. A plurality of support members for supporting the ends of the process units to be operated by hand extend substantially parallel to a linear path for conveying a recording medium, but outside of paths for moving the process units into and out of the apparatus body. A positioning mechanism positions the above end of the individual process unit relative to the support members. The positioning mechanism is implemented by holes formed in the support members, and pins studded on a positioning wall included in the individual process unit. The apparatus allows the process units to be positioned thereon accurately with a high mechanical strength, while allowing them to be mounted and dismounted with ease.

摘要： In an image forming apparatus, a cleaning device using a webbing is capable of surely removing stains firmly adhered to a desired surface to be cleaned. Even when the degree and the kind of contamination on the above surface is irregular due to the varying operating condition of the apparatus, the cleaning device is operable in a desirable manner. The cleaning device includes a webbing pressed against the surface to be cleaned and a pressing member having a plurality of projections with edge portions at the ends of the projections and wherein at least two of the projections are in the cleaning range at any one time. In a preferred embodiment, the cleaning device is provided in an image forming apparatus and cleans a conveyor belt for conveying a recording medium to which a toner image is to be transferred. Additionally, a controller in the image forming apparatus operates the cleaning device on the basis of the degree of contamination sensed by a sensor, to clean the surface a greater number of times at initial power up or controls the cleaning device to exert a greater force during recovery after an operational error.

摘要： A developing unit of the present invention includes a developing roller facing a photoconductive element and formed with a magnetic layer on its circumference. The magnetic layer has a plurality of magnetic poles of opposite polarities alternating with each other and each extending in the axial direction of the developing roller. A developer consisting of magnetic particles an toner are deposited on the developing roller by the magnetic poles and conveyed by the roller to the photoconductive element carrying a latent image thereon, thereby developing the latent image. An agitator for agitating the magnetic particles and toner is positioned relative to the developing roller such that a blade thereof has an agitation range overlapping with the magnetic force range of the magnet layer. With this configuration, it is possible to insure high quality images free from background contamination and toner scattering while extending the service life of the developing unit.

摘要： A color image forming apparatus forms an image having a plurality of colors. It includes a plurality of elongate photoconductive members of a number corresponding to the plurality of colors. The axes of the photoconductive members are arranged on a plane extending by no more than 45.degree. from the vertical direction. A plurality of developing units supply a liquid developer to each of the photoconductive members to develop latent images thereon. A movable transfer belt contacts the photoconductive members so that developed images may be transferred to the transfer belt. A plurality of cleaning portions are positioned for scraping liquid developer from the photoconductive members. The widths of the cleaning portions progressively increase from the highest to the lowest. An open topped casing is disposed below each of the photoconductive members for catching liquid toner dropping from the photoconductive members.
