    • In an image forming apparatus, a cleaning device using a webbing is capable of surely removing stains firmly adhered to a desired surface to be cleaned. Even when the degree and the kind of contamination on the above surface is irregular due to the varying operating condition of the apparatus, the cleaning device is operable in a desirable manner. The cleaning device includes a webbing pressed against the surface to be cleaned and a pressing member having a plurality of projections with edge portions at the ends of the projections and wherein at least two of the projections are in the cleaning range at any one time. In a preferred embodiment, the cleaning device is provided in an image forming apparatus and cleans a conveyor belt for conveying a recording medium to which a toner image is to be transferred. Additionally, a controller in the image forming apparatus operates the cleaning device on the basis of the degree of contamination sensed by a sensor, to clean the surface a greater number of times at initial power up or controls the cleaning device to exert a greater force during recovery after an operational error.

    • A developing unit of the present invention includes a developing roller facing a photoconductive element and formed with a magnetic layer on its circumference. The magnetic layer has a plurality of magnetic poles of opposite polarities alternating with each other and each extending in the axial direction of the developing roller. A developer consisting of magnetic particles an toner are deposited on the developing roller by the magnetic poles and conveyed by the roller to the photoconductive element carrying a latent image thereon, thereby developing the latent image. An agitator for agitating the magnetic particles and toner is positioned relative to the developing roller such that a blade thereof has an agitation range overlapping with the magnetic force range of the magnet layer. With this configuration, it is possible to insure high quality images free from background contamination and toner scattering while extending the service life of the developing unit.

    • A color image forming apparatus forms an image having a plurality of colors. It includes a plurality of elongate photoconductive members of a number corresponding to the plurality of colors. The axes of the photoconductive members are arranged on a plane extending by no more than 45.degree. from the vertical direction. A plurality of developing units supply a liquid developer to each of the photoconductive members to develop latent images thereon. A movable transfer belt contacts the photoconductive members so that developed images may be transferred to the transfer belt. A plurality of cleaning portions are positioned for scraping liquid developer from the photoconductive members. The widths of the cleaning portions progressively increase from the highest to the lowest. An open topped casing is disposed below each of the photoconductive members for catching liquid toner dropping from the photoconductive members.
