    • The invention provides a frequency control method and apparatus for efficiently controlling in a wireless system the carrier frequency of a received signal transmitted over a radio link to counteract carrier frequency drifts in the received signal and hence maintain link connectivity. In a preferred embodiment, the invention provides upstream and downstream carrier frequency control in a broadband wireless access (BWA) time division multiplex access (TDMA) system formed of a base transceiver station (BTS) and multiple customer premises equipment (CPE) units. At each of the CPE units, the CPE upstream carrier frequency is preemptively adjusted based on downstream carrier frequency measurements to counteract carrier frequency variations in the upstream carrier frequency. For downstream communications, the BTS periodically polls all active CPE units to obtain downstream frequency offset estimates, calculate a frequency correction offset and adjust the downstream carrier frequency accordingly.

    • The invention provides a signal power control method and apparatus for a wireless system to control the power level of a received signal transmitted over a radio link so as to counteract transmission impairments caused by environment variations and maintain the reliability of the radio link. The signal power control of this invention serves to control the transmit power used for transmission and adjust the position of the receiver dynamic range so that the received signal can always be optimally received. In a preferred embodiment, the invention is incorporated in a broadband wireless access (BWA) time division multiplex access (TDMA) system to maintain the reliability of an upstream radio link connecting a base transceiver station (BTS) with multiple customer premises equipment (CPE) units. In the preferred embodiment, power control messages are exchanged between the BTS and the CPE units based on the international telecommunications union (ITU) R112 local multipoint distribution service (LMSD) standard for effecting the signal power control of the present invention.

    • A novel system for performing adaptive beamforming in a slow frequency hopping environment is disclosed. The presence of slow frequency hopping means that conventional mechanisms of using beamforming weights from previous time slots are inapplicable. The inventive system calculates a series of beamforming weights from an estimate of the spatial location of the mobile subscriber in the previous frame, which is impervious to slow frequency hopping and the data that precedes the training sequence data of the current frame. The beamforming weights and the spatial location of the mobile are updated with the arrival of the entirety of the current frame. The initial beamforming weight estimate is sufficient to permit processing on a real-time basis of the current frame even if the inventive system is implemented as an appliqué system interposed between the antenna array and a conventional base station.

    • A system and method of providing an adaptive multi-beam capability to a wireless base transceiver station is disclosed. The system comprises a plurality of transmit and receive antenna arrays and a plurality of static beamformers to form a limited number of beams. The beam data is reduced to digital baseband form whereupon it is digitally beamformed using a set of adaptive beamforming weights generated having regard to the form and content of the data and the environment. Such form and content information is obtained directly or indirectly from the base transceiver station. The weights are calculated using an average power function derived from a correlation of the beam data with a reference signal that mimics the training sequence assigned to the base transceiver station. Because the average power does not vary widely from frame to frame, the weights derived from the uplink direction may be reapplied in the downlink direction. Specific provision is made for data packets, where downlink packets may contain control information intended for broadcast to all subscribers.
