    • A rolling mill comprising a roll unit and a drive unit for driving the roll unit. The drive unit comprises an outer housing, a pair of large-diameter ring-like driving bevel gears disposed concentric with the pass line, an input shaft mechanism for rotating the driving bevel gears, and transmission mechanisms for transmitting the torque of the driving bevel bears to the rolls. Each transmission mechanism comprises a small-diameter transmission bevel gear caught between and engaging with the driving bevel gears and first and second transmission shafts for transmitting the torque of the transmission bevel gear to a roll. The drive and roll units are coupled and uncoupled by couplings. Four positioning parts are formed on the outer periphery of the inner housing of the roll unit. The outer housing of the drive unit is generally in the shape of a ring, and four positioning parts are formed on the inner periphery of the outer housing. When the inner housing is fitted into the outer housing, the inner housing is positioned in the outer housing by the positioning parts laterally and longitudinally and also in both directions of the pass line by stoppers and hold-downs.

    • A solid-state color imager which eliminates moire fringes is disclosed. The imager includes, a base comprised of an array of solid-state switching elements, and a photosensitive layer, separate from and superimposed over the base, comprised of a top transparent electrode, an array of back mosaic electrodes and a light-sensitive material layer positioned therebetween. An array of multi-color filters are superimposed over the photosensitive layer. The filters, photosensitive layer and solid-state elements make up an array of pixels which are arranged in columns and rows to form the imager. The back electrodes have the same size, hexagonal shape and positioning as the filters. By arranging the pixels in overlapping columns and rows moire fringes can be eliminated.

    • A rolling mill having a plurality of roll units, a rolling-reduction adjusting device of an eccentric-cartridge type, and a roll-alignment adjusting device, all mounted on its housing. The housing is split into freely separable and joinable first and second housing segments. The housing segments have semicircular bearing-holder segments formed in their joint surfaces. The shafts of the roll units are held between the first and second housing segments by being journaled in eccentric cartridges which are fitted in the bearing holders consisting of the semicircular bearing-holder segments. The roll-alignment adjusting device includes adjusting mechanisms and chucks to connect the shaft ends of the roll units to the adjusting rods of the adjusting mechanisms. Each adjusting mechanism further comprises (i) an outer nut which is fixed to the housing and has internal threads, (ii) a middle nut which has internal and external threads, the external threads engaging the internal threads of the outer nut, and is rotated externally, and (iii) an adjusting rod which has external threads to engage the internal threads of the middle nut. A first thread joint is defined by the internal threads of the outer nut. An external thread is defined by the middle nut and the second thread joint by the internal threads of the middle nut and the external threads of the adjusting rod. The first and second thread joints are each given a thread of the opposite hand and a different pitch.

    • A method of and an apparatus for rolling a rod as a starting material and producing a wire of 5 mm or smaller diameter, the method and apparatus using a continuous rolling mill comprising a plurality of round-grooved four-roll stands arranged in tandem, wherein the grooved four-roll is displaced between adjacent rolling stands by 45 degrees relative to each other around the pass line and the center-to-center distance between adjacent rolling stands measured in the pass line direction is not greater than 50 times the diameter of the rod. The front end portion of the rod is fed at slow speed into the continuous rolling mill, the front end portion being guided by a front pipe to the center of the round groove, and the front end portion is wound on a coiler. After that, the rotation speed of the grooved rolls in each rolling stand is so set as to prevent slack in the rod passing through the continuous rolling mill, and the rod is rolled at high speed, without causing the rod to touch the leading pipe, to produce a wire. Each of the rolling stands that constitute the continuous rolling mill is movable in a direction perpendicular to the pass line, each rolling stand being moved for connection to or disconnection from the driving source.
