    • A secondary fuel pump assembly for a fuel tank in a vehicle includes a reservoir adapted to be disposed in the fuel tank having a top defining an overflow fuel level of the reservoir. The secondary fuel pump assembly also includes a conduit conducting return fuel from an engine of the vehicle to the reservoir and a jet pump having a discharge outlet in the reservoir and an inlet operatively connected to the conduit. The secondary fuel pump assembly includes an overflow fuel member defining a flow path for overflow of fuel in the reservoir and a guide member extending into the overflow fuel member and having at least one aperture extending therethough. The secondary fuel pump assembly further includes a guide disposed over the guide member and movable relative thereto to open and close the at least one aperture and a float connected to the guide to move the guide as a fuel level rises and falls in the reservoir.

    • A modular fuel reservoir (MFR) including a cup-shaped plastic reservoir and a fuel pressure regulator supported on the reservoir. A fuel pump is supported in a tubular chamber of a retainer on top of the plastic reservoir and includes an exposed metal shell bearing against a wall of the tubular chamber and an electric motor turned on and off through a positive contact terminal and a negative contact terminal on a plastic end housing of the fuel pump. The retainer is made of an electrically conductive polymer and includes a resilient fin bearing against a metal housing of the pressure regulator. Ions stripped from the fuel and collected on the metal housing of the pressure regulator are conducted to the negative terminal on the end housing of the fuel pump through the electrically conductive retainer, the metal shell of the fuel pump, and an internal conductor in the fuel pump between the metal shell and the negative terminal. The wall of the tubular chamber on retainer constitutes a shield around the fuel pump which reduces radiated electrical emissions attributable to commutation in the electric motor of the fuel pump.

    • A check valve plunger assembly for use in a fluid channel is provided. The check valve plunger assembly includes a check valve plunger having a first end, a second end, and a body portion. The body portion extends between the first and second end of the check valve plunger. The plunger assembly also includes an integral breakaway retention device having a ring shaped portion. The retention device is capable of being positioned around the check valve plunger such that the ring shaped portion surrounds at least a portion of the first end of the check valve plunger. Breakaway connectors are provided which connect the first end of the check valve plunger with the ring shaped portion of the retention device. After assembly, the check valve plunger is separated from the breakaway connectors and the plunger is able to freely move within the fluid channel. The present invention also provides a method of inserting this check valve plunger within the fluid channel.

    • A motor vehicle fuel sender including a container in a fuel tank of the vehicle having a horizontal partition separating a first chamber above the partition from a second chamber below the partition, a one-way valve between the fuel tank and the second chamber permitting only gravity-induced inflow of fuel into the second chamber, a fuel pump having an inlet to the second chamber, a drain port in the horizontal partition, and a float in the second chamber operative to open and close the drain port in accordance with the level of fuel in the second chamber. Return fuel from a motor of the motor vehicle is conducted to the first chamber which is open on top to permit overflow into the fuel tank in a manner which promotes thermal stratification in the fuel tank. The one-way valve is located near the bottom of the fuel tank so that the second chamber is replenished with fuel from only the lowest temperature stratum in the fuel tank. When the one-way valve is starved for fuel and the fuel pump drains the second chamber, the float separates from a lip seal around the drain port to open the drain port.

    • A fuel supply apparatus for a motor vehicle including a plastic canister, three evenly-spaced tubular struts on the canister, a plastic cover, a regulator pod on the plastic cover, and a pair of sockets on the cover and a socket on the regulator pod defining three evenly-spaced sockets on the cover adapted for plug-in reception of the tubular struts. The canister is inserted into a fuel tank of the motor vehicle through an access port. The cover closes the access port. A fuel pump in the canister delivers fuel to a high pressure conduit outside of the fuel tank through a high pressure fluid connector on the cover. A branch from the high pressure conduit is connected to a return fluid connector on the cover. The regulator pod has a return passage from the return fluid connector to the aforesaid socket on the regulator pod. A modular pressure regulator selectively unblocks the passage in the regulator pod to regulate fluid pressure in the high pressure supply side by recirculating a fraction of the fuel in the high pressure conduit back to the canister through the one of the tubular guides plugged into the socket in the regulator pod.

    • A fuel sender including a container in a fuel tank of a motor vehicle and, in the container, a filter, a fuel pump, a jet pump, and a pressure regulator. An upstream side of the filter and the fuel pump are connected through a first passage in a first end wall of the container. A downstream side of the filter is connected to an interior volume of the container through a convoluted second passage on a second end wall of the container. A pressure regulator on the second end wall of the container maintains fuel pressure at a substantially constant magnitude by variably restricting flow through the second passage. A venturi throat in the second passage aspirates fuel from the fuel tank into the container. The efficiency of the jet pump is maximized by minimizing the length of the convoluted second passage. Vibration isolating seals minimize the transfer of vibrations and pressure pulsations to the container. In a preferred embodiment, the filter has electrically conductive elements which are connected to a ground circuit of the motor vehicle for protection against static discharge.
