    • The present invention discloses a copolymer composition for use in or as a polymeric binder in an intumescent coating, said copolymer composition comprising a blend of a Newtonian copolymer and of a reticulated copolymer, wherein the Newtonian copolymer is comprised of p-methylstyrene repeat units and 2-ethylhexylacrylate repeat units, and wherein the reticulated copolymer is comprised of p-methylstyrene repeat units and 2-ethylhexylacrylate repeat units. The present invention further reveals an intumescent coating which is comprised of a copolymer composition comprising a blend of a Newtonian copolymer, a reticulated copolymer, a film-forming substance, and a carbon forming substance, wherein the Newtonian copolymer is comprised of p-methylstyrene repeat units and 2-ethylhexylacrylate repeat units, and wherein the reticulated copolymer is comprised of p-methylstyrene repeat units and 2-ethylhexylacrylate repeat units.

The present invention further reveals a method of manufacturing an intumescent coating comprising the step of (a) dissolving a Newtonian and a reticulated copolymer in a solvent, wherein the Newtonian copolymer is comprised of p-methylstyrene repeat units and 2-ethylhexylacrylate repeat units, wherein the reticulated copolymer is comprised of p-methylstyrene repeat units and 2-ethylhexylacrylate repeat units, and wherein the solvent is selected from the group consisting of organic solvents and water, (b) optionally, adding a chlorinated paraffin to the solvent, (c) homogenizing the mixture in the solvent, wherein one or more additives selected from the group consisting of conventional reactive pigments systems, dispersants, plasticizers, defoamers, thickeners, chlorinated paraffin solvents, waxes, fillers, fibers, and anti-settling agents are added to the solvent during the homogenizing step.

    • This invention discloses a resin which is particularly useful in making paraffinic solvent based paints, said resin being comprised of repeat units which are derived from (a) about 5 to about 60 weight percent tertiary-butyl cyclohexyl methacrylate, (b) 0 to about 40 weight percent vinyl aromatic monomers, (c) about 20 to about 80 weight percent alkyl methacrylate monomers, and (d) about 1 to about 30 weight percent alkyl acrylate monomers. These resins exhibit good hardness and excellent resistance to ultraviolet light. More importantly, coatings made with these resins are highly resistant to yellowing and discoloration on exposure to ultra-violet light over long periods of time. The subject invention further discloses a paint formulation which is comprised of (a) a paraffinic solvent; (b) a resin which is comprised of repeat units which are derived from (i) about 5 to about 60 weight percent tertiary-butyl cyclohexyl methacrylate, (ii) 0 to about 40 weight percent vinyl aromatic monomers, (iii) about 20 to about 80 weight percent alkyl methacrylate monomers, and (iv) about 1 to about 30 weight percent alkyl acrylate monomers; and (c) one or more pigments.
