    • Systems, methods, and computer readable media expounding “Structure Histograms” and their use are presented. Structure Histograms may be described as histograms whose individual entries (values) express a functional relationship between a given pixel (or group of pixels) and its neighboring pixels. As such, Structure Histograms capture information about the structure of an image in so far as they record information related to the relative placement of pixels within an image (e.g., are pixels of a common value closely spaced or spaced far apart). Structure Histograms may be generated from tonal pixel values (e.g., red, green and blue values), luminance pixel values (e.g., gray scale pixel values) or cross-channel pixel values (e.g., red-luminance, green-blue, or green-blue-luminance pixel values). Structure Histograms may be used in a number of image processing contexts such as, for example, automated image enhancement operations.

    • Methods, systems, and apparatus, including computer programs encoded on a computer storage medium, for applying color balancing to at least a portion of a digital image based on the digital image content. The color balancing process preferably operates in a gamma modified color space, transformed into an opponent color space with separate luminance and chromatic channels. The method also includes identifying a difference of at least one of the chromatic channels between an average color, determined for a region of interest in the digital image, and an ideal reference color for the feature the user desires to correct, as a basis for the color balancing process.

    • A system and method for changing data displayed on a touch-sensitive display screen. The present system and method recognize handwritten strokes made with a stylus on the touch-sensitive display screen of a PDA or palmtop computer in order to alter or correct displayed data. In one mode of operation, computer controlled association of the location of the handwritten strokes on the display screen with one or more of the displayed characters will result in automatic replacement of those characters by the handwritten strokes. In a second mode of operation, matching at least one of the handwritten strokes with one character of the displayed data will result in replacement of one or more characters of the displayed data with the handwritten characters. With the present system and method, the number of steps required to alter displayed data is reduced to the number of handwritten strokes. A significant reduction in time and effort as well as a simplification in application is therefore offered.

    • For an image editing application, a tool in a graphical user interface (GUI) for generating a duotone version of a subject image is provided. The tool includes several aligned thumbnail images in a slider, each thumbnail image occupying a spatial position in the slider that represents a unique range of colors. Each thumbnail image is a miniature version of the subject image that is generated based on a color within the unique range of colors represented by the spatial position of the thumbnail image. The tool determines a first color selection based on a position of a selector in the slider and a second color selection based on a complementary color of the first color selection. The tool then uses the determined color selections to generate a duotone version of the subject image.
