    • An air bag includes a bag base wall having a mouth registering with an inflator and extending rearward along an instrument panel and toward the seated occupant. Spaced apart left and right sidewalls connect the bag base wall with a top wall and an occupant facing wall, thereby defining upper and lower torso restraining portions. An internal baffle has a baffle base wall sewn to the bag base wall rearwardly of the mouth and a left side baffle portion and a right side baffle portion attached to and extending from the baffle base wall and attached to the sidewalls of the air bag so that inflation gas impinges on the baffle and divides into left and right flow streams flowing on opposite sides of the baffle base wall and directed downwardly into the lower torso restraining portion and away from the upper torso restraining portion.

    • An armrest for use with a motorized vehicle is provided comprising first and second substantially opposing surfaces elongated longitudinally along the vehicle's interior surface and extending laterally inward therefrom. The armrest also includes a substantially vertical wall portion extending from the inner periphery of the first and second surfaces. The first and second surfaces define a plurality of channels oriented substantially parallel to one another and elongated longitudinally relative to the vehicle, in either a parallel or oblique fashion relative to a longitudinal axis of the vehicle. The plurality of channels is configured to sustain substantial vertical loading and controllably deform under a predetermined threshold lateral crush load. In addition, the plurality of channels preferably includes one or more partitions within each of the channels that are oriented relative to one another to thereby create a load path for lateral loads imparted to the armrest assembly.

An air bag housing is box shaped with a base wall mounted on the seat frame and rear, front, and end walls extending from the base wall and a cover wall. An inboard chute panel and an outboard chute panel each have inner ends attached to the air bag housing and outer ends attached to the inboard and outboard seat cover panels adjacent to the separable seam. The attachment of the inner ends of the inboard and outboard chutes to the air bag housing is provided on the walls of the housing with the inner ends spaced from one another.

    • An air bag system housed within a cavity includes an inflator, an inflatable air bag, and an air bag housing defining a vent. A deployment door movable between a closed position and an open position at least partially covers the cavity. A vent restrictor is movable between a first position and a second position. In one of the first and second positions, the vent restrictor at least partially blocks the vent to restrict venting of inflation fluid therethrough. In the other of the positions, the vent restrictor leaves the vent substantially open. The vent restrictor is operatively connected to the deployment door or the air bag. When connected to the deployment door, movement of the deployment door from the closed position to the open position moves the vent restrictor. When connected to the air bag, inflation of the air bag moves the vent restrictor.

    • An air bag cover includes a mounting leg having an enlarged foot captured between the base plate and the inner plate. The base plate has a channel formed along its outer edge. The inner plate overlies the base plate and has an outer end portion that partially overlies the channel to capture and retain the foot of the mounting leg within the channel both prior to and upon opening movement of the air bag cover during air bag deployment. The base plate, the inner plate and the leg are configured such that the initial opening movement of the airbag cover is obtained by rotation of the enlarged foot within the channel, and then the continuing opening movement of the cover is obtained by bending of the mounting leg while the enlarged foot is constrained against further rotation within the channel. Auxiliary tear lines may be provided in the cover, particularly at or near the corners of an air bag flap to further enable low force opening of the cover.
