    • An information processing apparatus having speech and non-speech communication functions for communicating with another party in a non-speech mode in which data information is transferred and communicating with another party in a speech mode in which voice information is transferred. The information processing apparatus includes a speech and non-speech communication detecting apparatus for detecting whether the other party communicates with the information processing apparatus in a speech mode or a non-speech mode and transferring speech and non-speech data between the information processing apparatus and the other party, a non-speech communication unit for receiving non-speech data from the speech and non-speech communication detecting apparatus and supplying non-speech data to the speech and non-speech communication detecting apparatus when the non-speech mode has been detected, and a voice recognizing unit for converting voice information included in speech data from the speech and non-speech communication detecting apparatus into data information when the speech mode has been detected. The invention further includes a voice synthesizing unit for converting data information into speech data including voice information and supplying the speech data to the speech and non-speech communication detecting apparatus when the speech mode has been detected.

    • A pattern position detecting system comprising first means to sequentially fetch local images in a two-dimensionally arrayed form from a video signal in accordance with the scanning of an image and at sampling intervals which are variably instructed independently in the vertical and horizontal directions, second means to hold two-dimensional patterns having the same array as the local images, third means to evaluate the degree of non-coincidence between the image of the first means and the pattern of the second means, fourth means to store the position of an image scanning point at the time when the degree of non-coincidence becomes the minimum in a predetermined range within a picture frame, fifth means to calculate the position of an object from the position obtained by the fourth means, and sixth means to store the vertical and horizontal sampling intervals necessary for the operation of the first means, the two-dimensional patterns for use in the second means and numerical values necessary for the positional calculation of the fifth means, and to select required ones and send them to the first, second and fifth means.

    • In the handheld terminal device, when a message reception unit receives from a host computer a new arrival message indicating a new arrival of a file (or electronic mail), a control unit analyzes the new arrival message to obtain identifier information for identifying the file (or electronic mail) and a telephone number of the host computer. After a line connection to the host computer is established by a handheld phone transceiver unit, a fetch request command for fetching the file (or electronic mail) is transmitted to automatically fetch the file (or electronic mail) from the host computer and make the user know the contents of the file (or electronic mail) by using a display unit. A FAX transmitting user designates a destination handheld terminal device and transmits FAX image data to a communication server (CS). CS stores the received FAX image data and transmits a FAX arrival message to a pager connected to the destination handheld terminal device. A user of the handheld terminal device informed of a FAX arrival by the pager confirms the FAX brief image data contained in the message, and if necessary, calls CS by a handheld phone connected to the handheld terminal device to make CS transmit the FAX image data and refer to the detailed contents thereof.
