    • A knock suppression system for an internal combustion engine in which the occurrence of knocks is suppressed by quickly providing a corresponding control signal previously stored in a memory and determined on the basis of operating conditions of the engine so that knocks can be effectively suppressed. As the operating conditions vary due to change in ignition timing, A/F ratio, combustion chamber temperature, inlet air temperature, humidity, or the like, the control signal is corrected and updated to compensate for the change in knock level. Also, even at the transient state of the engine where the factors introducing knocks largely vary, a correction control signal corresponding to the variations during the transient operation can be carried out, thereby effectively and quickly suppressing engine knocks.

    • An ignition timing correcting system for generating a reference signal at a reference angular position of a rotating internal combustion engine, and having an ignition signal leading it by a constant phase. In response to a control signal from a movable tap on a potentiometer, the ignition signal is retarded in phase to form a retarded ignition signal. The phase comparison of the two signals produces an advance or a retardation signal formed of a pulse train having a pulse width corresponding to the phase difference there-between. During the idling of the engine, the correcting signal drives an electric reversible motor in either a forward or reverse direction so as to move the tap on the potentiometer to adjust the control signal after the correcting signal has been converted to a driving pulse having a longer pulse width when correcting in a direction to correct an advance of said signal than the pulse width when correcting in a direction to correct a retardation of said signal with respect to the phase difference.

    • An acceleration detector of the present invention which may be secured by a single screw to an internal combustion engine comprises a housing and a piezoelectric acceleration transducer assembly mounted in the housing by a stop nut. The detector comprises a recess for being engaged by a projection of the engine for positioning and preventing an undesirable rotation of the housing upon turning of the stop nut. The acceleration detector may comprise a low-friction washer between the nut and the terminal of the transducer assembly for preventing an undesirable rotation of the terminal upon turning of the nut. Alternatively, one of the terminals of the acceleration transducer assembly is made sufficiently rigid to permit the use of a tool on it to firmly hold it. An electrically insulating stopper projection may be provided between the terminals to prevent an undesirable rotation of the terminals. In order to facilitate the precise assembly of the acceleration transducer assembly, projection tabs are provided on the terminal for engagement with the piezoelectric element. Also, the contact surface of the stop nut may contact substantially the entire surface of the weight.

The operating parameters include an ignition timing, a supercharging pressure, a compression ratio, and an air/fuel ratio. When the pulse width becomes sufficiently narrow, the correcting signal is disabled to drive the motor resulting in the required control signal. That control signal corrects the retardation of the retarded ignition timing signal to a regular ignition timing.

    • An ignition timing controller for an internal combustion engine which is capable of automatically correcting the deviation of the ignition timing from the normal positions thereof in the cycle of the internal combustion engine is disclosed. Preliminary timing signals which are advanced by an angle in the cycle of the engine in proportion to the rotational speed of the engine are generated by a preliminary timing signal generator. The ignition timing signals are produced in said ignition timing controller by retarding said preliminary timing signals by a phase shifter in said controller. The advance angle by which the ignition timing signals are advanced with respect to reference timing signals which are generated for a reference purpose at fixed rotational angles in the cycle of the engine is detected, and the sum of said advance angle and the angle by which the preliminary timing signal is retarded by the phase shifter is memorized as a control signal by a memory during the idling state of the engine. The retarded angle by which the preliminary timing signals are retarded in the cycle of the engine is controlled by the memorized correction signal, so that the retarded preliminary timing signals, namely the ignition timing signals, and the reference timing signals coincide in the rotational angles thereof in the cycle of the engine while the engine is in the idling state.
