    • The present invention pertains to a process for manufacturing a solid composite separator, said process comprising the following steps: (i) providing a liquid composition [composition (L)] comprising, preferably consisting of: at least one fluoro-polymer [polymer (F)] comprising one or more backbone chains, said backbone chains comprising recurring units derived from at least one fluorinated monomer [monomer (F)], and one or more side functional groups selected from the group consisting of —O—Rx and —C(O)O—Rx groups, wherein Rx is a hydrogen atom or a C1-C5 hydrocarbon group comprising at least one hydroxyl group, optionally, at least one metal compound of formula (I) [compound (M)]: X4-mAYm wherein X is a hydrocarbon group, optionally comprising one or more functional groups, m is an integer from 1 to 4, A is a metal selected from the group consisting of Si, Ti and Zr, and Y is a hydrolysable group selected from the group consisting of an alkoxy group, an acyloxy group and a hydroxyl group, at least one inorganic filler [filler (I)], and a liquid medium [medium (L)]; (ii) providing a porous substrate layer made from one or more sets of polymer fibres [substrate (P)]; (iii) applying the composition (L) onto the substrate (P) thereby providing a wet substrate (P) [substrate (P—W)]; (iv) drying and then, optionally, curing the substrate (P—W) provided in step (iii) thereby providing a solid composite separator; and (v) optionally, submitting to compression the solid composite separator provided in step (iv). The present invention also pertains to the solid composite separator obtainable by said process and to use of the solid composite separator in electrochemical devices.

    • The present invention pertains to a process for manufacturing one or more fluoropolymer fibres, said process comprising the following steps: (i) providing a liquid composition [composition (C1)] comprising: —at least one fluoropolymer comprising at least one hydroxyl end group [polymer (FOH)L and—a liquid medium comprising at least one organic solvent [solvent (S)]; (ii) contacting the composition (C1) provided in step (i) with at least one metal compound [compound (M)] of formula (I) here below: X4-mAYm (I) wherein X is a hydrocarbon group, optionally comprising one or more functional groups, m is an integer from 1 to 4, A is a metal selected from the group consisting of Si, Ti and Zr, and Y is a hydrolysable group selected from the group consisting of an alkoxy group, an acyloxy group and a hydroxyl group, thereby providing a liquid composition [composition (C2)]; (iii) submitting to at least partial hydrolysis and/or polycondensation the composition (C2) provided in step (ii) thereby providing a liquid composition [composition (C3)] comprising at least one fluoropolymer hybrid organic/inorganic composite; (iv) processing the composition (C3) provided in step (iii) by electrospinning thereby providing one or more fluoropolymer fibres; (v) drying the fluoropolymer fibre(s) provided in step (iv); and (vi) optionally, submitting to compression the fluoropolymer fibre(s) provided in step (v) at a temperature comprised between 50° C. and 300° C. The invention also pertains to a process for the manufacture of said fluoropolymer fibre(s) and to uses of said fluoropolymer fibre(s) in various applications.

    • The present invention provides method for manufacturing a coated separator for use in an electrochemical device, comprising the steps of: (i) providing a separator having two surfaces; (ii) applying a coating composition [composition (C)] on at least one surface of the separator, the composition (C) comprising a polymer [polymer (P)] and at least one electrolyte salt [salt (E)] of formula (a), A+B− (a) wherein A+ indicates an ion selected from alkaline metal cations or a combination thereof, and B″ indicates an ion selected from anions or a combination thereof, so as to obtain a coating layer onto said surface; and (ii) drying the coating layer so as to obtain a coated separator, wherein the polymer (P) is a vinylidene fluoride (VdF) polymer and comprises recurring units derived from at least one comonomer (C), said comonomer (C) being different from vinylidene fluoride (VdF), and wherein the polymer (P) comprises recurring units derived from at least one (meth)acrylic monomer (MA). Further, the present provides a separator for use in an electrochemical device, said separator being coated on at least one surface thereof a coating comprising a polymer (P) and at least one salt (E) as described above, wherein said coating is characterized by: a dry thickness of from about 0.1 to 10 μm; a weight between 5 and 100% of the weight of the un-coated separator; or being substantially solvent free. Moreover, the present invention provides a method for producing an electrochemical device using the coated separator as described above.
