    • A multi-stack optical data storage medium (30) for recording using a focused radiation beam (40) having a wave-length ? and entering through an entrance face (41) of the medium (30) is described. It has a first substrate (31a) with present on a side thereof a first recording stack (33) named L0, comprising a recordable type L0 recording layer (35), and formed in a first L0 guide groove (38). The L0 recording layer (35) has a thickness dL0G in the groove (38) and a thickness dL0L adjacent the groove (38). A second substrate (31b) has present on a side thereof a second recording stack (32) named L1 comprising a recordable type L1 recording layer (34). The L1 recording layer has a thickness dL1G in the groove and a thickness dL1L adjacent the groove. The second recording stack (32) is present at a position closer to the entrance face (41) than the L0 recording stack (33) and is formed in a second L1 guide groove (37). The depth of the first L0 guide groove (38) is smaller than 0.15? and dL0L is substantially equal to or larger than dL1G by which it is achieved that the L0 stack (33) has a reflection level and a modulation level of recorded marks compatible with the dual layer DVD-ROM specification.

    • A method of recording information stores lead-out information on a multilayer record carrier of an opposite track path type. A two part recording area (54,61) across two layers is logically interrupted by an intermediate zone (55,56). According to a standardized recording format like DVD the recording area is preceded by a lead-in zone (53) located at the start of the first recording layer and followed by a lead-out zone (64) located at the end of the second recording layer. An outer lead-out part (62) and an inner lead-out part (63) are recorded separated by an unrecorded area (65) and together constituting the lead-out information on the second recording layer. The inner lead-out part covers a predefined radial position range corresponding to a range of radial positions used by reading devices for accessing the second recording layer during a disc loading procedure. The outer lead-out part is recorded at the end of an area of the second recording layer containing user information.

The radiation beam enters through an entrance face (8) of the medium (10) during recording. The medium comprises at least one substrate (1, 7) with present on a side thereof: a first recording stack (6), named L0, comprising a write-once type L0 recording layer, said first recording stack L0 having an optical reflection value RL0 and an optical transmission value TL0, a second recording stack (3), named L1, comprising a write-once type L1 recording layer, said second recording stack L1 having an effective optical reflection value RL1eff. The first recording stack (6) is present at a position closer to the entrance face (8) than the second recording stack. (3).
