    • A camshaft (326) has a vane (360) secured to an end thereof for a non-oscating rotation therewith. The camshaft also carries a timing belt driven pulley (332) which can rotate with the camshaft but which is oscillatable with respect to the camshaft. The vane has opposed lobes (360a, 360b) which are received in opposed recesses (332a, 332b), respectively, of the pulley. The recesses have greater circumferential extent than the lobes to permit the vane and sprocket to oscillate with respect to one another and thereby permit the camshaft to change in phase relative to a crankshaft whose phase relative to the sprocket is fixed by virtue of the timing belt (338) drive extending therebetween. The camshaft tends to change in reaction to torque pulses which it experiences during its normal operation and it is permitted to advance or retard by selectively blocking or permitting the flow of engine oil from the recesses by controlling the position of a spool (400) within a valve body (392) of a control valve in response to a signal from an engine control unit (408). The spool is urged in a given direction by rotary linear motion translating means (682) which is rotated by an electric motor (686), preferably of the stepper motor type.

    • A driveshaft in the form of a crankshaft (12) or a camshaft (212) drives a camshaft (16, 216) by means of a chain (20, 220) which is trained around a sprocket (14, 214) on the driveshaft and another sprocket (18, 218) on the driven camshaft. A spool valve member (50) is controllably positioned within a valve body (48), in response to instructions from an engine control unit (58) which acts through a pulse width modulated solenoid (56) to increase or decrease a load acting on one end of the spool, to permit or prevent hydraulic fluid from flowing from one tensioner to another as a result of a pressure differential between the tensioners. The pressure differential exists as a result of torque reversals in the driven camshaft during its normal rotation, the torque reversals having the effect of changing the levels of tension within the portions of the chain that are engaged by the tensioners.

    • A camshaft (426) has a vane (460) secured to an end thereof for non-osciling rotation therewith.     • A variable camshaft timing arrangement for an internal combustion engine in which a camshaft, for example, an intake valve operating camshaft in a dual camshaft system, is advanced or retarded in its position relative to the crankshaft and to the exhaust valve operating camshaft in reaction to torque pulsations in such intake valve operating camshaft. The other camshaft of the dual camshaft engine has a sprocket oscillatingly mounted thereon. The other camshaft also has a bracket or another sprocket keyed thereto and the bracket or another sprocket is chain driven by the rotation of the crankshaft. A pair of single acting hydraulic cylinders interconnect the oscillating sprocket and the bracket or other sprocket, with the piston ends of the cylinders pivotably attached to the oscillating sprocket and with the body ends of the cylinders pivotably attached to the other sprocket or bracket. The cylinders act in opposite directions and are hydraulically interconnected so that one extends as the other retracts and vice versa. The hydraulic system includes a control valve which is controlled by an engine controller to selectively permit one of the cylinders to extend, and the other to retract, in reaction to torque pulsations in the camshaft which is being advanced or retarded to provide desired engine operating characteristics. The bracket or other sprocket whose position is phase adjustable in this manner is connected by a chain to a sprocket which is keyed to the intake valve operating camshaft. An adaptation of the system to the synchronous phase adjustment of the positions of both camshafts of a dual camshaft engine is also specifically disclosed.
