    • A palm pad system including an electronic notepad coupled to a conventional personal digital device (“PDD”) via a data bus is set forth that enables a user to transpose handwritten data into electronic files or pages. The notepad and PDD are mounted onto a common base. The base includes a retaining structure for retaining the notepad on the base and another retaining structure for retaining the PDD on the base. The base further includes a flexible portion that permits the base to be folded into a compact form for protecting the notepad and PDD during transport. A pen containing a transmitter is employed by the palm pad system to transmit a signal to receptive electronics while a user writes data on the notepad with a writing tip contained in the pen. The signal received by the electronics is processed to generate an electronic file representative of the user's handwritten data. The electronic file can be electronically stored and retrieved. The electronic file can also be displayed on a touch sensitive display, which is associated with the PDD, immediately after composition by the user.

    • A shared memory is described having a plurality of receive ports and a plurality of transmit ports characterized by a first data rate. A memory includes a plurality of memory banks organized in rows and columns. Operation of the memory array is characterized by a second data rate. Non-blocking receive crossbar circuitry is operable to connect any of the receive ports with any of the memory banks. Non-blocking transmit crossbar circuitry is operable to connect any of the memory banks with any of the transmit ports. Buffering is operable to decouple operation of the receive and transmit ports at the first data rate from operation of the memory array at the second data rate. Scheduling circuitry is operable to control interaction of the ports, crossbar circuitry, and memory array to effect storage and retrieval of the data segments in the shared memory. The scheduling circuitry is further operable to facilitate striping of each data segment of a frame across the memory banks in one of the rows, and to facilitate striping of successive data segments of the frame across successive rows in the array.

    • A data well arrangement for storing data and for interfacing with a writing implement having a writing end with a writing tip and data transfer end with a data transfer tip is described. The data well arrangement has a housing with an inlet opening for receiving an end of the implement. A data reader resides in the housing for facing the data transfer tip to exchange data with the implement when the data transfer end of the implement is received in the opening. A shutter in the housing is engageable with an engagement portion of the implement for moving of shutter between a writing end storage position in which the data reader is inaccessible, and an interface position in which the data reader is accessible to the data transfer tip with the shutter being engaged by the engagement portion of the implement, only when the data transfer end is received in this opening.
