    • A universal interface system for use with a data acquisition system including a data acquisition device such as a bar code scanner or scanner integrated terminal for providing digital data signals indicative of acquired data for transmission to a host device such as a computer, and a host device having host-specific input/output data format requirements. The universal interface system comprises universal data exchange means located in the data acquisition device for providing digital data signals in a universal data exchange format independent of the data format requirements of the host device; and a host interface cable coupled to the data acquisition device and to said host device, for transmitting acquired digital data from the data acquisition device to the host device, the interface cable comprising means for translating digital data from the universal data exchange format to the host-specific input/output data format requirements. The interface cable comprises a buffer for storing a host parameter data word used in communications with the host device. The universal data exchange means comprises a memory for storing a plurality of host parameter data words, each of the host parameter data words being associated with one of a plurality of different host interface modules; and means for reading from the memory and transmitting to the host interface module the host parameter data word associated with the particular host interface module operatively connected thereto.

    • A hardware identification system is provided in a bar code reading arrangement including a main body and a plurality of modular detachable scanning heads connectable to the main body dependent on the application desired for the reader. Each of the heads includes a voltage divider dividing identification voltage and the main body includes a microprocessor including an analog to digital converter which reads the identification voltage, converts it to a digital signal and compares the identification voltage against a look-up table of identification voltages and their associated hardware element to identify the module type. Alternatively, or in addition, the module may be similarly configured to identify the main body by virtue of an identification voltage defined by a voltage divider in the main body. Alternatively the hardware identification system includes an electronic subassembly such as a PC board used for example in computer systems for automatic identification of hardware.

    • A beverage dispensing system having control-based functionality for managing a beverage dispensing process and a cleaning process for fluid dispensing system is disclosed. The beverage dispensing system has one or more beverage containers that supply beverage(s) to beverage line(s), which in turn, supply the beverage(s) to dispense unit(s), or tap(s). A controller manages overall functionality of the system. Each beverage container includes a beverage port through which a beverage is output to an associated beverage line for communication to an associated tap. A coupler is affixed to the container and interfaces the associated beverage line to the beverage port on the container. The controller monitors flow through the beverage lines to determine whether any of the couplers are malfunctioning by allowing fluid to flow when the beverage dispensing process is disabled. The beverage lines also include fob detectors that are configured to facilitate the cleaning process.

    • Graceful/hitless restart features from a routing/signaling protocol may be utilized along with synchronization between cluster members in order to provide routing capabilities in a clustering environment. During normal operation, the active cluster member may operate the routing protocol(s) and communicate with the neighboring components using the cluster's address. As the active member learns the routes to the destinations, the routing data may be propagated to the stand-by cluster members across an internal communication mechanism. Configuration information for the routing component may also be propagated to the stand-by cluster members. Upon failure of the active routing component, the standby routing component may be started up such that neighboring routing components located outside of said cluster do not recalculate network topology based on said failure. This allows for failover to occur without affecting neighboring components and unduly burdening the system.

    • A method of reading bar code symbols includes determining one or more parameters based upon the quantity and/or quality of the data which is being acquired, and providing the user with information concerning that parameter. The parameter may, for example, be the rate at which code words in the symbol are being read, and that information may be passed to the user by way of an LED which flashes at a rate which varies with the data acquisition rate. For a given bar code symbol being read, the rate of flashing varies with the position of the bar code reader with respect to the symbol. To improve the data acquisition rate, the user simply moves and/or rotates the bar code reader with respect to the symbol in a direction which causes the rate of flashing to increase. The invention extends to a bar code reader having means for providing an indication to a user of the relative suitability, for optimal reading of a symbol, of the current position of the reader.
