    • An optical character reader for conversion of information to a machine readable code from a strip of alpha-numeric characters on the face of a document. It includes an elongated document slot along which the document may be hand guided through a predetermined path. Optical viewing means is provided across a scan line intersecting the path of the alpha-numeric characters. A character scanning assembly electronically generates images of each character. Recognition processing means encodes these images into a machine readable code. All of the physical, optical and electronic components are contained within a compact single enclosure. Incandescent lamps are utilized to illuminate the document face across the scan line. The usable life of each lamp is extended by providing a constant current source in the operational lamp circuit. Incandescent lamps are utilized to illuminate the face of the document across the scan line. Lamp life is extended by dimming of the lamps when they are nonoperational, maintaining the lamps in a state of excitation beyond the crystalline state of the material comprising the lamp filaments. A second form of lamp life extension is provided by interposing a constant current source in the electrical power supply connected to the lamps in their operational state.

    • A system for surrogate control of a space that incurs an ineffective sensor connection with its controller for running environmental conditioning equipment to maintain the space at one or more certain environmental parameters such as temperature. A selection of a surrogate space from which the surrogate control is obtained, may be made by correlation of data over time and specifications of other spaces in a building complex. The surrogate control may be from the controller of the space selected for control of the space having the ineffective sensor connection. The surrogate space may be a construct of one or more spaces. It may be based on a virtual space that combines behaviors of other spaces for a good match. Diagnostics may be effected from information about spaces in the system.

    • A building management system for one or more buildings, having a processor and a display for showing a model of a building being managed. The model may be shown as a three dimensional depiction or rendition, or a virtual building. A database may provide information regarding sensors, actuators and other items which may be viewed in conjunction with the displayed model. Information regarding the location and status of the sensors, control devices, and the like, which may be points of interest, may be mapped on the virtual depiction or model of the building. A user or operator may thus move through the building and view and affect rooms, sensing and control devices, and other items, including quick navigation to points of interest, in virtual reality. A recorder and play mechanism may be a significant portion of the system for recording structures, parameters, environment, events and other information of the system.

    • A flexible tooling system includes a support table with multiple openings adapted to removably accept a self-contained actuator. Each opening of the support table provides vacuum and air supply lines as well as a bus interface so that each position may be uniquely addressed and commanded separately from any other openings. The self-contained actuator has corresponding connectors for receiving the vacuum and air supply as well as for interfacing with the bus. An actuator may be placed at a particular location by insertion into the receptacle at the opening in the support table aperture. The actuator may be commanded to raise, lower, lock in position and supply vacuum separate from any other actuator.
