    • N-higher alk(en)yl neoalkanamides are new compounds which unlike many other amides, are oily at washing temperatures, in the 10.degree. to 90.degree. C. range, and are capable of being adsorbed from wash and rinse waters by fibrous materials, such as laundry of synthetic, e.g., polyester, fabrics, which laundry is susceptible to being electrostatically charged, and decrease any electrostatic charge or inhibit accumulation thereof on such materials. Such neoalkanamides, e.g., N-coco-alkyl neodecanamide, can be incorporated in detergent compositions and in compositions for addition to laundry rinse waters, and in some instances it may be desirable for bentonite powder or agglomerate to also be included in such compositions to contribute fabric softening and other useful physical properties. Washing and rinsing operations are described in which N-higher alk(en)yl neoalkanamide is present in the waters, with and without supplementing small proportions of quaternary ammonium salt. Also described is a process for manufacturing higher alk(en)yl neoalkanamides in the form of oils which are desirably light in color and of improved purity.

    • Polyamides of trialkylacetic acids and polyamines are new compounds which are of an oily nature at washing temperatures in the 10.degree. to 90.degree. Such polyamides, e.g., that of neodecanoic acid and an alkylene polyoxyalkylene triamine, such as that which is sold by Exxon Chemical Americas under the name Jeffamine.RTM. T-403, can be incorporated in detergent compositions, in compositions for addition to rinse waters and in composition for application to laundry in a laundry dryer, and in some instances it may be desirable for bentonite powder or agglomerate also to be included in such compositions to contribute fabric softening and other useful physical properties. Washing and rinsing operations are described in which the polyamide is present in the wash or rinse water, with and without supplementing small proportions of quaternary ammonium salt, which improves antistatic effects on laundry containing polyamide (nylon) and acetate synthetics. Because the proportion of quaternary salt may be decreased, due to the presence of the invented polyamide, which is very effective in reducing static electricity on polyester fabric, its presence does not cause objectionable deposits on the treated fabrics and reduction of detergency due to reaction with anionic detergent is no longer a severe liability. There is also no reduction in brightening activity of optical brightener(s) present in the detergent composition and in the wash water.

    • A wash cycle fabric conditioning composition, which makes laundry washed in an automatic washing machine and dried in an automatic laundry dryer resistant to the accumulation of static charges thereon, and which may be in particulate, liquid, or other suitable form, comprises an antistatic N-higher alkyl neoalkanamide or an antistatic N-higher alkenyl neoalkanamide, or a mixture thereof, and a detergent builder, such as a water soluble builder salt or a zeolite, or a mixture thereof, as a carrier, or an aqueous medium containing a nonionic surface active agent. Specifically preferred neoalkanamides of the type described are N-higher alkyl neodecanamides, such as tallowalkyl neodecanamide. In some instances, bentonite may be included in the particulate compositions to soften the fabrics that are washed, and tertiary amines may be formulated into the liquid compositions to increase fabric softening action. Despite the fact that the conditioning composition is added to the was water in the wash cycle of the automatic washing machine, the neoalkanamide thereof does not react adversely with anionic detergents in the wash water, (unlike quaternary ammonium halide antistatic agents) so the cleaning power of the detergent in the wash water is not comprised, even when the detergent employed is an anionic detergent.Also within the invention are a process for manufacturing the particulate fabric conditioning composition and a method of using the compositions described.
