    • A refractive index measurement cell for liquid samples and method for measuring refractive indices of liquids are described which comprise a transparent tubular member closed at one end defining a sample volume of semicylindrical shape with respect to an axis for containing a liquid and having a diametrically disposed wall element including a flat surface defining the sample volume and containing the axis; a reference line coincident with the axis on the flat surface; a light source for projecting a light beam through the wall element, reference line and sample volume, whereby the beam is refracted at the flat surface; and a detector, selectively positionable about the axis of the tubular member, for detecting the light beam transmitted through the sample volume and for measuring the angular position of the beam about the axis.

    • An optical reflection band filter structure for selectively blocking radiation within a preselected range of wavelengths is described which comprises a plurality of multipole elements of preselected configuration deposited with prescribed spacing in a periodic array on a substrate of dielectric material, each multipole configuration comprising a central element of metal and having shape corresponding to the overall shape of the multipole and a plurality of spaced metal segments, each space between adjacent segments being filled with a segment of material characterized by a transition from superconducting phase to insulating phase upon being heated to a characteristic transition temperature, each transition segment disposed outwardly from the center of the multipole element having lesser thickness than, or different composition from, the next inwardly disposed transition segment, the innermost transition segments having thickness substantially equal to that of the metal segments and central element.

    • An optical filter structure for blocking radiation at or shorter than a preselected design wavelength is described which comprises a substantially transparent dielectric host material having dispersed therethrough a multiplicity of grains in preselected size and volume density within the dielectric, the grains comprising a material characterized by a transition between insulating and superconducting states at a characteristic transition temperature. The grains have diametric size substantially smaller then the longest wavelength of light to be absorbed, the filter absorbing resonantly via the dielectric anomaly and being tunable through selection of volume fraction of the grains within the dielectric.

    • A novel device for holding an optical prism in a preselected orientation is described which comprises a base having a substantially flat first surface thereon and first and second upstanding side members attached thereto with the first surface therebetween, the side members defining respective substantially parallel confronting second and third surfaces, each substantially perpendicular to the first surface, for mounting an optical prism therebetween, a shoulder of preselected height and width on the first surface adjacent the second surface for supporting the prism in spaced relationship to the first surface, a tapped hole through the second member and substantially perpendicular to the third surface, and a set screw received by the tapped hole for holding the prism in a preselected orientation between the second and third surfaces. The base may include a peripheral flange for mounting the device.
